I was under Dr. Shin's care for over a year after I suddenly started having hip pain. He correctly diagnosed that I had a torn labrum, and indicated I had mild FAI that was causing the torn tissue. Long story short, this was not the full picture. Dr. Shin is a caring and compassionate doctor, but his expertise seems limited to arthroscopic procedures (this is what he recommended for me to fix the torn labrum and shave off the extra bone causing the tear). There are hip preservation specialists who focus more on structural surgeries and several of them told me that the cause of my torn labrum was in fact hip dysplasia (not the tiny bit of extra bone on my femoral neck). They also told me it would be extremely irresponsible to have a scope procedure done without fixing the underlying dysplasia through a different procedure called a PAO. Irresponsible because recovery from a scope is 6-12 months, and the labrum would only tear again if you don't fix the cause for it tearing in the first place. Also irresponsible because I was nearing the upper age limit for having a PAO (they prefer you to be under 40 certainly, and some docs won't do the procedure unless you're under 35) and would have missed my window if I hadn't gotten a couple of additional opinions to figure this out. Dr. Shin is kind, caring, well intentioned, and cautious (he encouraged me to try PT and other conservative treatments before recommending the scope procedure, which is good)... but missing the hip dysplasia diagnosis was a big fail in my opinion as it could have led me to further injury and failed surgeries. I will also add that his front desk and physician assistants are very nice and helpful, and I never had any issues with billing or...
Read moreLet's face it--- who wants to see a surgeon? Especially the ones shoving surgery down your throat -- when a more conservative route might be better. This is my second gig with Dr. S and his staff -- 1st time was for a total shoulder replacement. Instead of doing it himself, he had the humility to refer me to someone else who had more experience w the type of issues i had w my shoulder. So now I"m back w 2 bad knees -- compliments of too many marathons and other body crushing sports. Dr S outline every possible option for me -- the super conservative route of injections/anti-inflammatories, a less invasive surgical option and a pretty grueling surgical option. Because he took the time to know my history and me, he understood that I've undergone 3 significant, invasive surgeries in 3 years, including a spinal fusion which resulted in years of complications and post op procedures that I'm still under going. After talking about all 3 options at length, he allowed me to choose w/ no pressure. After I chose, I asked him what he thought-- and it was what he would have proposed. We will be going the less invasive surgical route because I'm too full of cortisone from my spine and shoulder from previous years and already on a host of anti-inflammatories. After what my body has been through, the more invasive surgery would likely be far more taxing than normal. This is what garners one's trust in one's physician -- and he has mine 100%. Shout out to his staff - Michael, Aaron and Heather -- who not only run a tight ship. but are just as buttoned up about my case, my history and me. They feel like family. Once again, less than 5 mins wait time -- and that's...
Read moreOver the past two years, I have been a patient of Dr. Shin. In May 2024, he performed a gluteal tendon reconstruction procedure on my right hip utilizing a Regeneten patch and bursectomy. I underwent a similar procedure on my left hip in May 2025. I conducted extensive research on Dr. Shin and discovered his exceptional specialization in this surgical specialty. Despite consulting multiple doctors, none had performed this procedure. I was fortunate to find Dr. Shin, who possesses kindness, thoroughness, and a comprehensive understanding of the potential benefits and risks associated with my surgery. He provided me with ample time to review my condition and explore various treatment options. I diligently followed his advice, and my right hip has since experienced complete pain relief. Both hips require a year-long recovery period, and I anticipate continued improvements. My left hip, performed in May, is progressing well considering its limited timeframe of four weeks. I have commenced physical therapy, which I believe will be instrumental in my recovery. I anticipate further insights by the completion of my recovery within the next year. Dr. Shin is an exceptional surgeon, and I wholeheartedly recommend his services. His office at Post Street and Burlingame exudes friendliness and organization. I extend my sincere gratitude to Dr. Shin’s scheduler, Gloria, for her exceptional kindness, respect, and meticulous organization. Her contributions significantly enhanced the overall completeness and efficiency of my surgical experience. Thank you Dr. Shin for a...
