I've been coming to this place for about 10 years. Their products still maintain good quality, but recent service has been a hit or miss. This morning I was there to order some ham. Because of a long waiting line, when it was my turn, I told one staff that I'll have to come back in 10 mins (checking on meter) while he was slicing my ham. 10 mins later, came back, the same staff greeted me saying the ham is ready. I got the impression that it's ready to be paid so I asked him to add one quick item ( a package, no slicing needed). He then suddenly switched to a hostile tone saying I need to wait in line because he is helping another costumer, right in front of everyone in the store. Why didn't he just told me to wait a bit when I stepped back into the store to avoid this misunderstanding??? And a condescending tone of voice is no way to treat people who bring you business. Please have a better customer service training for your staff, Fatted Calf. I need to add that the other staff ( the redhead man) was very nice and courteous as always, so as most other staffs on other occasions.
Also, on reading another reviewers note, I echo: earlier before I made my order, the same rude staff was going behind the counter cleaning things back and forth while there were 3 costumers...
Read moreExploring Fatted Calf's Porchetta Sandwich
Today, while wandering around the Ferry Building during my lunch break, I stopped by Fatted Calf and remembered that we had tried one of their sandwiches at their Napa location a few weeks ago. As I looked over their menu, the Porchetta Sandwich caught my attention right at the top. I asked the gentleman behind the counter about their most popular sandwich, and he mentioned that customers typically order the hot pastrami sandwich. However, he suggested I try the porchetta sandwich instead, so I decided to go with his recommendation.
I ordered the porchetta sandwich and was surprised to find that it wasn't served warm. However, when I returned to the office and opened it, I understood why! The generously sized sandwich was filled with radish, carrot, and herb salad, along with several thinly cut slices of porchetta, which added a wonderful flavor. The freshness of the salad ingredients complemented the savory taste of the porchetta perfectly.
I took my time enjoying the sandwich and made a mental note to return one day for the hot pastrami sandwich. Overall, it was a satisfying meal that I would recommend to anyone looking for a hearty and flavorful lunch option in the...
Read moreThis is an expensive butcher shop. For example, hamburger meat is $10/lb. That said, if you make meat a treat for yourself (i.e. you don't eat meat all the time but when you do, you want it to be a excellent), this is the place.
For example, my roommates did a taste test between a steak from this place and the same cut from a butcher shop on Divisadero (might not be around anymore). The steak from Fatted Calf was vastly better, however, the steak from the cheaper place was okay (not bad). Therefore, if you eat meat regularly and you don't consider yourself to have a refined palette (or if you're on a budget), I don't recommend this place.
I gave it "excellent" ratings because despite the price, everything they have is excellent. Besides meat, they carry some bread, pasta, crackers, dairy, and preserves; all from local producers.
Also, their meatloaf sandwich is incredible. Seriously, if they have one where you're there, buy it; you...
