As a comparison to other major wholesale suppliers (who also do retail) in San Francisco, Acme is tier 1, but at a price. You’ll find Semifreddi’s to be a par-baked version (that you can finish at home quickly, for a fresher texture and flavor) at a lower price (though not organic, like Acme) — these two are about the only brands at a grocer that I’d recommend.
Whatever you do, Boudin — which is underwhelming and expensive — can be easily skipped. Even Paul Hollywood was rightly disappointed in his youtube trip to San Francisco (it’s a good episode in its own right). Their bread is made into various shapes to distract from its middling quality.
Since no one has actually posted a retail menu, I’ve contacted them and done so here. (Their on-site menu is comprosed of little signs in each bread). It’s updated as of 1/1/24.
Prices seem to have increased 25-80% since covid, but I understand. As I assume that they pay reasonable...
Read moreI tried Acme Bread Company for lunch a couple of days ago. It is located in the Ferry building so at the peak lunch hour like every other place it had a huge line. Acme Bread Company specializes in different kinds of bread so it is not a natural choice for lunch, but due to a late breakfast, I just wanted to do a light sandwich so Acme fitted the bill perfectly. I decided to get the Green Garlic Sandwich ($6.48). I managed to get the last sandwich so it is advisable to come early if you want to get your hands on one.
I would describe the sandwich as minimalist yet terrific. It is garlic, roasted red peppers, balsamic vinaigrette and black pepper all housed in a baguette. The sandwich has a nice crunch but it is not overly crunchy. It has a nice chew but is not overly chewy. Yes it is pricey but fine for the location. Yes it is a small portion which will do only for a light meal, but it is...
Read moreReally annoying experience at the ferry building. I got a salami sandwich on a baguette and there was no butter on it that I could see or taste. After taking a bite, I went back to the counter and asked if I could have a little more butter. The counter man said they never gave people more butter, so I asked to see his supervisor. She said we can't give you more butter. I asked if they made the sandwich there, and she said yes but they had no facilities for giving me any more butter. So I said why can't they just give me a pat of butter on a piece of paper, since there was no butter on the sandwich. She said "we feel that's adequate butter for the sandwich". So they refunded my money and got a sandwich with a bite out of it, and my never going back there. It seems like a very stupid and very arrogant way to run a...
