H.A.L.O. No-Kill Rescue Shelter — Local services in Sebastian

If I could give this review zero stars i would. I went online and found an adorable dog, who was sick with lymphoma. He immediately tugged at my heart as he and I had something in common- I have leukemia. Plus he’s a French bulldog. I love the breed and wanted nothing more than to bring him home to love and take care of him for as many days as he has left.

So, I reached out via the contact form, explained that I really wanted to foster him and that we had cancer in common also mentioning that I’m in remission thinking that would be a positive in that I understand what he’s going though.. I also completed an application. No one ever responded to the contact form but 2 days later received a vm with the message that she wanted to talk about Bentley but didn’t leave her name. Unfortunately, since I was working I was unable to answer the call but did call back about an hour and a half later. No one answered so I left a vm. Didn’t get a return call and reached out again about 45 min later. The person that picked up the phone didn’t recognize my name but after looking at the applications they had located me.

She then told me that someone had previously submitted an application and since they had dogs they had to do an introduction to make sure Bentley was a good fit but if it wasn’t they would reach back out to me ( based on past experience they never will regardless) I asked how long ago that app was submitted and she told me 4-5 days. I call BS. On their website Bentley was not marked as adoption pending until after I called. .

This is the second time something like this has happened. They didn’t even give me a chance to respond to their voicemail. I don’t like the way they handle adoptions. WHY did I even get a call if his fostering was pending? It seems like all they want to do is get rid of the animals in their care. Not available when they call? On to the next and then the next, etc I’m done. I’m not going to attempt another adoption only for my hopes to be dashed because I wasn’t quick enough.

I went to adopt a cat from this shelter not even a year ago; now I realize why they were trying to get me to pick her up so quickly. I went into HALO to pick up a cat and found a little black female kitten. She was extremely small so I just assumed she may have been the runt of her litter. Not even days after filling out her adoption paperwork we get calls asking to pick her up immediately, that she has to come home immediately. They were in such a rush to get her out. I only had one other cat at home, a healthy, adult male. No history of disease or illness. I brought her home and took her to get all of her updated vaccinations. Shortly after she turned a year old (after only having her for a few months) she started rapidly losing weight. So we took her to the vet clinic where they were also baffled as to how she could be so sick? We had panels done for her only to figure out that she has fiv (feline aids) and if we didn't pick up medication for her she wouldn't live much longer. My two cats are STRICTLY indoor cats and my other cat does not have fiv, my kitten has also never been exposed to other cats while being under my care. HALO purposely either neglected having the proper testing done to ensure she was a healthy cat, or didn't expose the fact that she had fiv, preventing us from getting her proper treatment earlier. I truly believe they ushered her out quickly because they knew she was sick and didn't want to spend money from their budget to get her treatment. I do love my cat and will do what I can for the remainder of her life. But my advice to anyone considering adopting from HALO: get testing done on your cat, because you simply cannot trust that the cat they give you is in perfect health, contrary to what...

I tried to adopt a kitten from Halo. I read on their website you could pick a kitten of any age, and get a voucher for the cat to be neutered when old enough. The day I picked one, I filled out paperwork I was assured the kitten would be ready to go home the next week and they'd call me. Then I was told that all cats had to be neutered before going home (unlike the website). I called and they said their kittens had some respiratory cold, wait another week. Next week they said the kitten was too underweight to be neutered. And the week after that. Finally almost a MONTH later I am told the kitten absolutely has a vet appt. for tomorrow and they'd call me after. The next day there's no call. I call and the kitten HAS NOT GONE to the vet to be neutered. At this point I talked to my bf, and we agreed we didn't trust this place to give us a healthy animal.... if they planned to give us one at all!

During this entire month they did not call me once, I called every time. I got a ton of sloppy misinformation. When I finally complained that the cat hadn't been taken to the vet, the person on the phone was rude. When I said to hold off on the adoption, the person at Halo seemed completely indifferent. This entire thing was really upsetting to me, and after a month I felt like I was abandoning a cat I never even had. Halo seems to have little interest in actually getting their animals adopted.
