Great Outdoor Store — Local services in Sioux Falls Township

I don’t know how I'm going to be brief in extolling just how AWESOME this place is. The inventory is amazing, but the employees, well in particular, Delton, he is the real reason I'm writing this

I cruised into S Falls for a buddies memorial 🙏 from San Diego and had forgot to pack my running shoes. So a local buddy said lets go and see what we can find. I got a nice tour of downtown SF. Really didn’t think I’d come close to finding a high-quality shoe store because...come on, I’m from the metropolis and used to REI and other specialized stores.

Well boy was I surprised, in particular when I went into The Great Outdoors! Selection of shoes was amazing, including Lems and On to name a few. I knew today was going to be a good shoe day. Yay!

Then Delton came into the picture. A genuine cool dude, but flat out knew shoes and customer service! And after him, it’s clear no one has ever correctly measured my feet. Oh they’ll give your toe length, I can see that myself on the devise, but he also measured my tarsal length to give me a better understanding of what is probably a better idea of my shoe size (I was under sizing myself my 1.5)!!

But here’s the kicker. He ended up not having my size in the On shoe that I was leaning towards. So instead of pushing me into another shoe I “liked”…he recommended two other places in town that might carry this On shoe, and said they have some he doesn’t, gave me directions and generally wanted me to go check them out! Wasn’t worried about the sale, he was interested about making sure that I got the shoes that I’d be most happy with.

So I went to the other place to look. Ya, they had it in the size I wanted, and also another brand he didn’t have, Altra. As a bit of a challenge, I decided to ask the sales clerk if she’d measure my foot size. “Toe length” was the limit of her knowledge. Didn’t even know how to operate the tarsal measuring tool. No real hack on her, but after Delton, sorry, it was clear she was just a “sales clerk” Not a PROFESSIONAL like Delton. I ended up falling in love with some Altra shoes at this store and it might be the favorite shoe I may ever worn and... I bought them from there.

But I actually felt bad I wasn’t buying from Delton! When we drove past the store on the way home, I felt like going in there and just buying something from him...but outta time.

Figured this review might do even more.

Best sales experience I’ve had in 30 years. Old school salesman, knew his sh*t, and cared about the customer. Brick and mortar, small business USA!

Unlikely to ever get back to S Falls again, but if you’re reading this, GO THERE!

Look I don't take 5 star reviews lightly. I don't believe in unicorns (but yes to rainbows!) but let's just say they are rare. Well, this one is a no brainer. It starts when you pull up to the store. Even from the outside, it's just warm and cozy with a kind of northwoods lodge feel. Then you walk in the door and feel two things: Welcomed and quality! I was looking for a specific type of jacket/outer layer and DeAnn and her crew went to work. I put them through their paces and they did not flinch! We finally found a Kuhl Outlaw Waxed Jacket that checked off all the boxes. And the more I look at that jacket and the more I wear it, the more I like it! It is quality! The kind of quality that gets better with age. Not saying my kids will fight over it when I'm dead but hey, it's a jacket! Also picked up a Nocs 8x Zoom Tube Monocular that is outstanding! Anyway, I can't say enough good things about the great team at The Great Outdoor Store! Please folks do yourself a favor and visit them and buy some quality merchandise. What a great little shop. I went in looking for a solid pair or daily shoes/boots. I am very hard on shoes and I find that outdoors and hiking boots tend to last the longest. The woman who helped me was very knowledgeable and helpful in finding what I needed, even though I am a bit vague. They had a tight selection but everything I could ask for at the same time. Almost went for a pair of Danners but they didn't have it in bigfoot size so they had me try a keen and a oboz. They unfortunately didn't have a wide model oboz in stock or I would have been sold, that said the keens are great. Later that day I ended up stopping back in after darn tough socks recommended I could buy a pair locally at thier shop, to my joy they had the socks and a couple other interesting things.
