Old School and great memories, a part of Southport's rich history.

The Old jail is right in front of the old family homestead, my great grandfather built the house. When allowed, I even got to chat with a long term prisoner from his front row window. Sadly, it is no longer part of the family, just grand memories of growing up and growing into a career soldier that has retired from the Army as a Vietnam veteran (1 deployment, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Blackhorse) and Iraq veteran (2 deployments, 1st Infantry Division, Big Red One) My summer job after high school graduation was at Military Ocean Terminal SUNNY POINT. Support Our grand and awesome Coastal areas and Beaches. The Old Jail is part of Southport's rich history and our kids need to see it and know of it. Be safe and careful. If my memory is correct, the Jailer during my high school years, name is James. The Historical Society is during a grand job of maintaining Southport NC history. This tour should be on One's itinerary. Recommended to All. "ALLONS" Matthews, NC serves as the...

We visited the Old Brunswick County Jail in the midafternoon on a weekday. It was a great time since we were the only ones there. Another group came in shortly afterwards. We were met by two volunteers who started telling us about the jail and its history. As we walked through the door of the next room the others came in so one volunteer continued with us and the other started with the new group. The volunteers were very knowledgeable, and gave us a detailed description of the various rooms and their uses. While it is a small building, there were diverse uses for the rooms. We particularly enjoyed seeing the small jail cells upstairs, and the stories about the inmates. One story described how they managed to dig through a brick wall and jump down about ten feet to the ground. We also each got to take a mugshot, as you can tell from my wife’s picture! While the admission was free, don’t miss the opportunity to make a donation to help out with the maintenance of...

Why are old jails so much fun to explore? This jail located in the town of Southport, is such a fun hands on roadside attraction! Life in this old brick building had its share of criminals that left their marks throughout the cells. We loved seeing their drawings on the walls and items left behind. The kids enjoyed checking out the cells and even taking their own personal mugshots (that better be the only one they ever take!) A nice...

This is such a unique place. While the exhibits are small, they are thorough and packed with artifacts. The two guides were incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. They made it highly engaging for our young children and even gave them sheriff badges. It is a free, quick stop that should be added to every trip to Southport!
