Great record store with fair prices....
I live 90 mins away, but I have always gone to MSJ when in the Stroudsburg area visiting relatives. I started going in the 90s when the store was in a slightly different location on Main Street.
It's a great store, with a very nice longtime owner, a helpful and friendly staff, and it has a relaxed atmosphere. MSJ is in a good neighborhood for lunch.
They avoid all the mistakes that many other record stores make. I am speaking, of course of snotty, snobby, easily triggered owners/salespeople, or racks of lps too jammed or unpriced "bring to the counter for price"albums, etc. The records here are priced clearly and fairly, in my opinion*.
*If you haven't shopped for records in recent years.. the demand for records has gone up drastically in recent years, and prices have gone up accordingly everywhere. You will not find 2008 (or 1974) prices on records in 2025. Especially on original pressings of the big classic rock albums by the top bands still played on the radio. I feel these guys are pretty fair, especially if you compare shopping at a store vs. shopping online, where you have to pay extra for shipping and really have nothing more than a vague hope that the LP will arrive in the stated condition.
That aside. and back to the review...
The more expensive items have sealed flaps, but you can open and inspect the vinyl at the counter. Less expensive records can be inspected at the rack if you do so carefully (i.e., not accidentally flinging the record across the store or getting yer greasy fingerprints 'em).
Note: Record swapping will get you banned, you delinquents ;) - so don't be that person. Also, drinks are a no-no for understandable reasons.
MSJ has tons of great vinyl in vg'+ or better condish. Rock is broken down alphabetically in various sections by price: $10 and up, $5, etc.
There are boxes underneath these lp racks, but they request you get an employees help to access them. I never have time to crate dig, but I aspire to one day.
I pick up a lot of records each visit, with very few exceptions (over 30 yrs) the albums and cds I've purchased have always been in VG+ or better, clean, etc. I have often traded in albums for store credit, and they are reasonable if you bring in decent records in nice condition that are not super common.
I can't speak to how well they cover other genres since I mostly concentrate on rock - but there's a good amount of other stuff to peruse. If you go, I hope you find that gem you are...
Read moreSuper nice guy Tom. I brought my dad's lifetime collection of LPs , 45s, picture discs, autographed concert programs etc. in to him (about 11 cases) He went through it all and accepted 99% of them. [I think he may possibly have made out better than I did LOLLOL] BUT BUT BUT admittedly, some were not in the greatest outer condition, again 50 years of collecting and storing. I am very thankful and relieved to not have to deal with each one of them (it was a substantial undertaking probably close to 600+ and he got through them in an hour) Tom even had someone help with a hand truck which was super nice. I am happy to help out a local small business and I hope that my dad's lifetime of collecting bring people some joy and nostalgia and I hope it brings prosperity to those who need it. Tom welcomed me to bring the remainder of dad's collection and some other collectibles he had. I hope to be back again soon. Thank you again! It was great meeting with you. (I couldn't bear to go through your store right now, I feel bad enough parting with my dad's treasures, but it looks like an awesome place that I'd want to check out sometime in the...
Read moreThe staff seems friendly enough and the prices on used records can't be beat. However, their selection of records is abysmal unless you're the biggest Linda Ronstadt fan in the world. Their metal/punk selection hardly has anything in it, and none of those records are used. All full price. They had one Black Sabbath record, and it was Dehumanizer. Not that that was a bad album, but if you're looking for Sabbath on vinyl, you probably have Masters of Reality in mind. I couldn't find a single Rolling Stones or Aerosmith record, and the only Rush album that they had was a new copy of Fly By Night (with the price jacked up in light of Neil's passing). I did find a handful of good records, but I had to spend 30 minutes looking for 5 records. I spent 5 minutes looking through their embarrassingly small classical section and couldn't find...
