Caution- shop at your own risk at this place. I'd give this place a minus 5 for being unprofessional and unsanitary. I've been shopping at the Tigard Hmart once a month. They have some groceries that American grocery store doesn't carry. Today (9/12/21), I spent about $150 -28 items. My grocery did not fit in my canvas bag, so I bagged (yes, they expect you to bag your groceries) them in their brown paper bag. As I reached for the second bag, the cashier, Cristian (per receipt, I'm unsure if this is her name since she did not have her name tag, and she and her manager refused to provide her name, no one wears their name tag in that store.) became angry. She interrupted me by putting her hand over the pile of the brown bags and rudely shouted at me, something about I must pay with badly broken English in Spanish Accent. I was speechless. I told her she could ask politely. I also told her that charging me for one bag was unacceptable since I bagged all my groceries. Then, another Hispanic clerk ganged up on me and attempted to harass me. I asked for the supervisor. The supervisor stuck up for her subordinate and chose to refund me instead of compromising with a simple apology- she had to go through with all 28 items. The supervisor then called me a "loser" when I refused to take her "order" and put the cart back. I asked her name, but she rudely refused- according to my returned receipt, it showed, "Hye Shin." I asked for the manager's name and number; she just gave me H-Mart general business card without anybody's name. From now on, whenever I have cravings for those groceries that I wasn't able to get today, I will block it with today's horrible experience and what I witnessed within Tigard H-Mart a month ago; leaking ceiling and their kitchen employees re-use disposable gloves- by leaving them on the bathroom counter, and put them back again without washing their hands. Read moreI really like this store. I love Asian cuisine and would like to learn to prepare some of the dishes I love, and I'm sure I could find any ingredient my little heart desires here. This is the only store in my area where I can find gai lan, my favorite vegetable in the broccoli family. The produce here seems more reasonably priced than at the big chain stores, but you won't find as much variety. That is, unless you're shopping for more traditional Asian veggies and greens. I admit, I still don't know what most of them are or how they're used. The freshness of their meats seams better than typical grocery chains. The variety of fish and other seafood is mind-boggling to me. I have noticed, however, that much of it is farm-raised. My only complaints about h-mart are with the layout of the center aisles, and the lack of clear separation and signage for products that are tough to differentiate. For example, in the packaged instant soup section (which is MASSIVE by typical US grocery store standards), I was looking for rice noodle varieties. It took way to long for me to find them. They weren't grouped in any useful way, which makes it painfully difficult to find something when much of the packaging is in a foreign language. I've found different varieties of dry noodles in 2-3 different places. The same with sauces, oils and seasonings. Unless you're reasonably familiar with Asian cooking and ingredients, it might be challenging to find what you're looking for. And if, like me, you have ADHD or some other form of executive disfunction, you might need a nap when...
Read moreMISLEADING HOURS. They do NOT close at the supposed times mentioned on Google. Instead, they close anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes early on any given day, depending their mood (not exaggerated, been there at near-closing and got kicked out early but at random times each time). I confronted the man about it. He said their "closing time (in this case, 9:30PM) is for the store. Not customers". I told him "Then you should update your hours. It's misleading. People expect to have enough time to shop until the time it says on your doors/google listing. It's not up to them to figure that some random time near closing, they should just leave. People can't read your mind. Write 9:20PM if that's when you close". He gave me a dirty, spiteful look, got silent, and my wife and I walked away. But seriously, I have no respect for stores that tell you their PUBLIC time of closing is for internal use. So WHY is it public then??? It's not rational. And the people behind me who were clearly nervous because they had a cart full of things shouldn't have been! It's silly that you get shamed for giving a store business (that most other stores are happy to take until stated closing) and pass off a heaping chunk of anxiety onto people to end the night. Don't mislead others. If 10 minutes matters that much to you, say what you mean and don't kick people out...
