A few months back, I decided to finally see what all the fuss was about with Diptyque candles, and honestly, I really enjoy them! I grabbed one of their sample packs with three different smaller candles. It was definitely worth it to try out a few of the scents I was curious about.
Most of them smell great. I totally get why Baies – which is French for berries, by the way – is their superstar. It’s such a lovely, classic luxury home scent. My husband isn't a huge fan of the rose or floral undertones in it, so it's become my perfect daytime companion while he's at work. Then I just switch it out for something else before he gets home! Even with that, Baies has become one of my go-to daytime or when guests visit scents. You can tell they put quality into their fragrances.
But here’s the thing that’s been bouncing around in my head: the price. As much as I adore these candles, and they are beautiful, I’m still on the fence about whether the cost is justifiable for me, for my own personal taste and how often I burn through candles. They’re a treat, for sure, but I'm not sure I'll be purchasing them on a regular basis.
The interesting part is that starting my fancy candle journey with Diptyque kind of opened up a whole new world for me. I've since stumbled upon some other companies that make really quality stuff but at a price point that’s a bit easier to swallow. For example, I’ve absolutely fallen in love with Harlem Candle Company. And for some pretty great lower-priced VERY close to the original "alternatives" that hit a similar note, I’ve also really enjoyed what I’ve found from Element Brooklyn. I’ll probably gush about them and Harlem Candle Company in another review sometime!
So, bottom line? I genuinely love the Diptyque candles I tried. They’re wonderful, and I totally get the hype. But, for me, the high price tag makes them a fantastic and very occasional splurge. I'll enjoy every last bit of the ones I have, but I think I'll be keeping an eye out for other amazing brands for my everyday candle fix.
Now, about the in-store experience at their Georgetown location. I have to say, after reading some other online reviews, I can see where some of the less glowing ones were coming from. When I initially walked in, I admit I felt a little bit of that same slightly off vibe from two of the three people working there. They neither greeted nor acknowledged me, simply looking up and continuing to chat with each other. It's that feeling you sometimes get, you know? And when that happens to me in a store, I'm not uncomfortable politely questioning the kind of reception I'm getting.
However, before I said anything this time, things totally turned around thanks to Davida! She was the sales associate who ended up helping me, and she was absolutely amazing – so friendly and really knew her stuff. She asked me thoughtful questions about what I was looking for, the vibe of my home, and just personal stuff that helped her point me towards scents I’d actually like. She really made the difference and turned it into a genuinely luxury experience. And get this – she even gave me a free mini candle, Feu de Bois, which was such a fantastic surprise and, wouldn't you know it, also became one of my favorites.
The bags, the boxes, the marketing – it’s all very chic and exactly what you’d expect from a brand like Diptyque, especially once Davida stepped in! The behavior of the first two associates was neglectful and overtly dismissive. It was disappointing and drastically diminished my overall experience as a potential new customer, as well as my impression of this location. However, if I could base my star rating solely on my interaction with Davida and the quality of the products, it would be an unequivocal and...

I have been shopping at Diptyque for a couple of years now but I had never had such a lovely and welcoming experience. The Georgetown folks really set themselves apart from any other store in the country. Since the first time I walked into the store Don approached me and helped me choose my favorite scent ever (Orpheon) he is incredibly knowledgeable with the notes, stories, and personality of all the fragrances. Since I walked in I have received a stellar treatment by everyone at the Georgetown location.
After my very first purchase Don reached out to me to ask me how I was liking the scent and if I had tried any of the samples I had received. He has always been incredibly helpful and amazingly nice. Don truly makes the shopping experience feel luxurious and comfortable. The rest of the Georgetown personnel is also incredibly friendly and helpful.
Walking into a Diptyque store is truly an experience that instantly sends you to the beautiful streets of Paris, the smell and arrangement of the store makes you feel welcomed. But what sets the Georgetown location apart is that the personnel makes you feel at home.

Read moreI've always loved Diptyque's fragrances, so when Diptyque opened a Georgetown location, I really looked forward to going there and shopping. I went to this store last month and the shop's staff was so rude. I went in trying to decide between two scents - Philosykos EDP and Eau Rose. I ultimately decided to buy both the Philosykos EDP and the Eau Rose. I asked the woman behind the register if they had both scents in stock and she rolled her eyes and said, "We have the Eau Rose in 50ml... but the Philosykos EDP doesn't come in 50ml." (Note: I never asked if the Philosykos EDP came in 50ml, just if they had the scent in stock.) I responded and said that I was happy to get the Philosykos EDP in any size, at which point she said, "Are you really trying to buy both scents? Do you know how much they cost?" When I said that I did want to buy both, she checked if they had the Philosykos EDP in stock and then said that they didn't have it. I ended up just buying the Eau Rose and leaving -- but the interaction we had seemed weird so about an hour after leaving, I called the store and got a different person (a man) and asked him if they had the Philosykos EDP in stock, and he said that they did - and this was pretty late in the afternoon, so I doubt that they had just received a new shipment. What a weird thing to lie about. You would think that they would want people to buy multiple scents. While I could speculate as to why the first woman was rude to me specifically, I'll just say that this experience made it very unlikely that I'll return to this location...
