It’s been almost 11 years that I’ve taken classes with Spanish Tutor DC. I started in April 2013 as a complete novice who didn’t speak a word of Spanish. But thanks to my first tutor and various other professors at the institute, I can maintain meaningful conversations and negotiations with native speakers, read Spanish language literature and newspapers, and enjoy songs, podcasts, films and series in Spanish, in most cases without resorting to a single subtitle.
I was introduced to Spanish Tutor DC by a friend who had started participating in group classes. I took 3-4 private lessons to catch up and join the group. The learning started immediately: the entire class was held strictly in Spanish, teachers made sure to give everyone ample time and space to practice, correct pronunciations, accents and grammar. The practice books, articles or series we watched were great supporting material for class activity, and homework was taken seriously. The institute was also flexible to allow us to take two classes per week in the beginning, a fantastic opportunity to build a solid foundation fast. Finally, when there was a need to take substitute classes, the institute offered options and made it seamless to try new groups or teachers but continue with the same principles approach.
After friends started leaving the group for personal reasons, I decided to continue private or semiprivate classes. These soon became my favorite time of the week and enabled me to connect better with my Spanish speaking colleagues at work.
During this time I’ve had the privilege of learning from native instructors from Spain, Peru, Mexico, Guatemala, Cuba, El Salvador, Venezuela, Argentina and Colombia. This was a deliberate attempt by my current tutor and the institute to familiarize me with different accents, different cultures and the themes and realities of the Spanish-speaking world. Thanks to them, I started listening to podcasts in Spanish, reading literature (from short stories to various literary books), and writing reviews or summaries of articles or other themes. My recent years of classes have also featured learning and talking about science and economics in Spanish. Thanks to my tutor´s support and encouragement, I’m planning to study and take the DELE C1 and C2 exams in the coming year and see myself in a good position to succeed.
I am happy and grateful for all the wonderful years of education, culture, and support, and I look forward to continuing the journey with...
Read moreI have taken foreign language courses with Spanish Tutor DC on and off for more than ten years in Spanish and more recently in French. My experience with Spanish Tutor DC has been extraordinary and includes both group and private classes. The intensive private lessons work best for me at the earlier stage of language development. A weekly one-on-one session with Spanish Tutor DC over the course of approximately two years, brought my Spanish speaking ability from an Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) level 1+ to a level 2+ based on an Oral Proficiency Interview conducted by an independent agency. A group class in Spanish allows me to maintain and improve the level of proficiency already gained, while participating in a low-stress convivial conversation group conducted 100% in Spanish.
I currently enjoy private French lessons with Spanish Tutor DC and am very impressed by the patience and care that my instructor exhibits. He places particular emphasis on pronunciation, one of my weaker abilities in French. The fact that I can chose the text that I prepare for each lesson is appealing to me, since it insures my interest and "buy-in" for the matter to be discussed.
In both Spanish and French my experience with Spanish Tutor DC has been entirely positive and I recommend their classes to students wishing to acquire, improve, or maintain foreign language...
Read moreFantastic experience with Spanish Tutor DC. I've learned multiple languages and know my style as a language student, so I had very specific demands from a tutor: I wanted to focus on Castilian Spanish, I was looking for a teaching style that was tailored to my strengths and weaknesses, and I needed flexibility in scheduling to adapt to my work travel schedule. Spanish Tutor DC delivered all of this and more. They not only matched me with one of the best language instructors I've ever had, but the podcast and written exercises available on their online campus gave me the ideal structure to stay focused and moving forward. After 56 hours (7 groups of classes) over the course of a year-and-a-half, I went from an absolute beginner to being able to use and understand both written and spoken Spanish in everyday situations. I now have a solid foundation in grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation that I can build on to achieve greater fluency. I highly recommend Spanish Tutor DC -- if you put in the effort, they will get you to where you want your Spanish to be. ¡Gracias a todo el equipo de Spanish Tutor DC, y especialmente a Orlando por su paciencia...
