The Lotus Puppet Show was a delightful experience that I thoroughly enjoyed. The intricate puppetry and the storytelling through this traditional art form were captivating. It transported me into a world of enchantment and cultural richness.
The puppeteers’ skills were truly impressive, and the puppets themselves were beautifully crafted. I found myself mesmerized by the graceful movements of the puppets as they danced and acted out the stories.
However, there was one small aspect that I wished for more of during the show - explanation. While the puppetry itself was mesmerizing, a bit more context and narration about the stories being portrayed would have enhanced the overall experience. Understanding the cultural significance and the stories behind the puppets would have added depth to the performance.
Additionally, I couldn’t help but wonder if there was an opportunity for a behind-the-scenes tour. If such an option were available, I would undoubtedly sign up for it. Exploring the intricacies of puppet making and seeing the puppeteers in action backstage would provide an educational and immersive component to the show.
In summary, the Lotus Puppet Show is a must-see in Hanoi, offering a mesmerizing performance that provides a glimpse into Vietnamese culture. While I thoroughly enjoyed the show, a bit more context and the possibility of a behind-the-scenes tour would make the experience even more enriching. Don’t miss this cultural gem when...
Read moreEnthralled and Captivated!! A group of seven of us visited the 5.00 pm puppet show on 15th January 2017. Puppets wearing decorative costumes with their dazzling vibrant dances accompanied by a live orchestra kept us entertained and mesmerised for 45 minutes. It was over all too soon!! We did not feel the time go! The surface of a four metre square pool was the stage of the water puppets. As observed from the samples mounted at the entrance, the puppets themselves are made of wood and then painted. As explained by our guide, the puppeteers or those who manipulate and control the puppets do so from behind a bamboo screen. The puppets are attached to long bamboo rods. The bamboo rods and the control strings are under the water hidden from the viewers. The puppets come on stage from either side of or under the screen. As perceived from the final scene when the artiste puppeteers come out for the “Good Bye” scene, they are in waist deep water meaning the pool must be waist deep. A live traditional Vietnamese orchestra provided the music. I guess the pool would assist in improving the acoustics of the orchestra. The musicians interact with the puppets in echoing or shouting impending danger or encouragement as needed. Altogether 12 acts were performed within the 45 minutes keeping the viewers enthralled with this puppet dance accompanied...

The Theatre is centrally located and easy to access. It would be good to book in advance as the auditorium was almost full when we reached; we were lucky to get the first row of seats, giving us the perfect view for watching as well as for taking photographs.
The water puppet show is unique with the explanations of the concept of the same and the picturizing of this traditional art form. The program was very well organized with guests filling in quickly and the show starting right on time.
The various folk stories were very beautifully presented, the lore displayed on a projector screen in both Vietnamese and also English. The simple words and right use of words made it easy to understand.
The team of artists were experts and played each of their parts amazingly well, capturing the attention of the audience very quickly and keeping them in complete concentration. Each show was about 30 minutes.
The lobby of the Theatre displayed a series of puppets, props and various instruments which are used for the show. One can easily spend several minutes looking around at these interesting items and understanding the various...
