My review is low because of just one dish: fried pork bao. I could barely swallow it, it tasted terrible. The waiter took the plate to the kitchen, the chef tried it and said it's good, so the dish was included in the bill. I'm actually surprised. I tried 1 bao, my friend tried 1 too, 4 were left untouched. What exactly did we pay for? For the staff to eat the dish we ordered? There was one friendly waitress, everyone else seemed annoyed with our presence (even before we complained about the dish). The atmosphere is pretty, cannot argue with that (except for the smelly toilet). Other baos we ordered and the soup were okay. The lemonades were very good, I think it's the only thing I really enjoyed a lot.
I've been to many Chinese and Asian restaurants in Armenia, China, and across the world. It's the first time that I dislike something so much, which is probably okay, people have different tastes, the reason I'm leaving this review is the attitude of the staff and the fact that they didn't even think of excluding the dish from the bill. Read moreMao Yerevan, Armenia: Kitschy Mao is oh-so-cute with mod-Asian touches - a wok-fried medley of Japanese, Chinese and even Thai elements. In a city dominated by dark, solemn and grey Brutalist and Soviet architecture and styling notes, Mao is a welcome respite of bright coloured, tres-chic fun. The ambience is an instant perk me up. Food is good too, I am sure Asian food is hard to come by in the city. We had Pad Thai shrimp and deep-fried sweet potato with shrimp. Where we hail (Singapore), it is dirt cheap to eat good Asian but we didn’t mind splashing out for a change of taste from the Azerbaijian food we were used the past 7 days. Cocktails looked wicked but it was a dry day for me....

The ambient mood lighting is perfect and glass sculptures and artwork amplify an elegant souk feel. Add to this a sublime sound system and a playlist of ambient and uplifting beats. It’s exactly what you need to recharge after a day exploring Yerevan.
Two stars merit special mention. Servers Achima and Samuel. The brightest smiles you’ll surely see. Perfect attentive service. And Samuel’s recommendation of Mongolian beef, wok fried shrimps in tamarind sauce. Two insane dishes. And the lychee cocktails ain’t too bad either.
