Short Grain by Martin Boetz is a culinary gem, and in my opinion is Brisbane's best new opening! Nestled within the historic Stewart & Hemmant building, this restaurant is a breathtaking blend of contemporary design and rustic charm. The moment you step inside, you're greeted by a flood of natural light, exposed brick walls, and an ambiance that sets the stage for a memorable dining experience. Short Grain is an ode to the vibrant flavors of South Asian and Thai-inspired cuisine, all masterfully crafted in Martin Boetz's signature style.
My husband and I were so happy with our first visit that we couldn't resist returning for lunch the very next day. Across our two dining sessions, we savored a delightful array of dishes:
The Oysters with red chili nahm jim and fried eschallots. The Chicken skin, smoked trout, green mango, and peanut relish dish was an explosion of flavors. *The Salt & pepper cuttlefish with sweet soy & lemon. The Fresh green papaya salad with prawns. All of our starters were incredible, and so fresh!
Our mains were equally impressive, with the Fried whole market fish stealing the show. The snapper, caramelized turmeric, pineapple, and fried basil combination is something I'll cherish in my food memories forever:) It was so delicious! And let's not forget the mouthwatering Yellow curry of Five Founders grass-fed beef curry, served with kiflers and cucumber relish – an absolute winner!
Though I had heard raving reviews about the Duck egg caramel custard tart, we can never resist indulging in a good Black sticky rice with mango and coconut cream – a decision we didn't regret! Every dish was a testament to Short Grain's commitment to freshness and excellence.
Beyond the delectable fare, the service deserves special mention. The staff went above and beyond from the moment we walked in, making our dining experience truly exceptional. I'd return to Short Grain just for the outstanding service!

Read moreWe ordered the $62 massaman curry....the meat was so tough we would have appreciated a knife. In trying to pull it apart with only the fork and spoon provided, I ended up with the sauce in my hair, on my shirt and all over my brand new tan skirt. I had to leave our meal to try and clean myself and I'll still have to pay for dry cleaning, unfortunately. My partner works in hospitality, so we never complain, however we politely mentioned the tough meat in this instance because it was simply something the chef needed to know. Our waitress was lovely but I wasn't impressed that the manager's reaction was to assume we were trying to get an unwarranted discount. We are the type to purchase many rounds of cocktails after our meal, but instead we left.
More importantly, though, I was clear when booking and before ordering that I can't eat soy. I was told the dishes we ordered would be safe for me. However, I know I was given soy because my tongue and throat swelled, ending my night prematurely. I trusted the kitchen with my dietary restriction and was failed.
