Short Grain by Martin Boetz is a culinary gem, and in my opinion is Brisbane's best new opening! Nestled within the historic Stewart & Hemmant building, this restaurant is a breathtaking blend of contemporary design and rustic charm. The moment you step inside, you're greeted by a flood of natural light, exposed brick walls, and an ambiance that sets the stage for a memorable dining experience. Short Grain is an ode to the vibrant flavors of South Asian and Thai-inspired cuisine, all masterfully crafted in Martin Boetz's signature style.

My husband and I were so happy with our first visit that we couldn't resist returning for lunch the very next day. Across our two dining sessions, we savored a delightful array of dishes:

The Oysters with red chili nahm jim and fried eschallots. The Chicken skin, smoked trout, green mango, and peanut relish dish was an explosion of flavors. *The Salt & pepper cuttlefish with sweet soy & lemon. The Fresh green papaya salad with prawns. All of our starters were incredible, and so fresh!

Our mains were equally impressive, with the Fried whole market fish stealing the show. The snapper, caramelized turmeric, pineapple, and fried basil combination is something I'll cherish in my food memories forever:) It was so delicious! And let's not forget the mouthwatering Yellow curry of Five Founders grass-fed beef curry, served with kiflers and cucumber relish – an absolute winner!

Though I had heard raving reviews about the Duck egg caramel custard tart, we can never resist indulging in a good Black sticky rice with mango and coconut cream – a decision we didn't regret! Every dish was a testament to Short Grain's commitment to freshness and excellence.

Beyond the delectable fare, the service deserves special mention. The staff went above and beyond from the moment we walked in, making our dining experience truly exceptional. I'd return to Short Grain just for the outstanding service!

Having Short Grain in Brisbane is a culinary blessing. With its fresh ingredients, delectable condiments, and sauces, I foresee it becoming an institution in no time. We eagerly await the opening of the Asian food store and can't wait to come back for more. Don't miss out on this culinary treasure – make a reservation at Short Grain and treat yourself to an unforgettable dining experience. Great food, Great wine...

A Culinary Gem in Brisbane - Short Grain Delights the Senses

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Short Grain in Brisbane, and the experience exceeded all expectations. From the moment we stepped through the door, the warm and inviting atmosphere set the stage for an unforgettable dining adventure.

The interior design at Short Grain is chic yet cozy, creating the perfect backdrop for an intimate meal. The attention to detail is evident, from the stylish decor to the thoughtfully arranged tables that allow for a comfortable and enjoyable dining experience.

Now, let's talk about the star of the show – the food. Short Grain's menu is a masterpiece, showcasing a fusion of flavors that celebrate both creativity and culinary expertise. Each dish is a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with freshness. Martin Boetz at Short Grain has truly mastered the art of balancing flavors, leaving our taste buds dancing with delight.

One standout dish was the chicken cracker, betel leaf, smoked river trout, green mango and peanut relish, a perfect harmony of textures and tastes that left me wanting more. The use of locally sourced ingredients is a testament to Short Grain's commitment to quality, and it truly makes a difference in every bite.

The service was equally impressive. The staff at Short Grain exuded professionalism and friendliness, creating an atmosphere that felt both refined and welcoming, and our experience meeting Martin was delightful. Their knowledge of the menu, coupled with helpful recommendations, added an extra layer of enjoyment to the overall dining experience.

To complement the outstanding food and service, Short Grain boasts an impressive beverage selection. The curated wine list and signature cocktails perfectly complement the menu, elevating the entire dining experience to a new level.

In conclusion, Short Grain is a culinary gem in Brisbane that deserves every bit of acclaim it receives. Whether you're a food enthusiast or someone looking for a memorable dining experience, this restaurant delivers on all fronts. Our visit to Short Grain was nothing short of extraordinary, and I eagerly anticipate my next opportunity to savor the exceptional flavors that this establishment has to offer. Well done...

We ordered the $62 massaman curry....the meat was so tough we would have appreciated a knife. In trying to pull it apart with only the fork and spoon provided, I ended up with the sauce in my hair, on my shirt and all over my brand new tan skirt. I had to leave our meal to try and clean myself and I'll still have to pay for dry cleaning, unfortunately. My partner works in hospitality, so we never complain, however we politely mentioned the tough meat in this instance because it was simply something the chef needed to know. Our waitress was lovely but I wasn't impressed that the manager's reaction was to assume we were trying to get an unwarranted discount. We are the type to purchase many rounds of cocktails after our meal, but instead we left.

More importantly, though, I was clear when booking and before ordering that I can't eat soy. I was told the dishes we ordered would be safe for me. However, I know I was given soy because my tongue and throat swelled, ending my night prematurely. I trusted the kitchen with my dietary restriction and was failed.

Not...

What an experience. Was delighted to dine here on a casual Sunday lunch. The service here was warm and friendly, and I saw Martin working away with his team! He's an amazing guy. Cocktails from the bar and wine selection are very good! Lychee Martini, how could I say no? Food the cuttlefish was amazing with the sweet soy lime dressing. I could drink the dressing. (I wish I had brought a bottle while I was there) The curry for the main of fish was beautiful balanced, loved the strong herbs, and lime I just wasn't too keen on the eggplant peas as I think they took away from the dish with the bitter flavour. The amazing thing about Short Grain is that many of the dishes can be ordered half serves, so you can try many things! I love this concept. The roti was crisp and so good. Dessert a palm sugar caramel custard. Was a stand-out dish! Would have ate another if I could fit it in! Definitely leave room for dessert here! Went during lunch so the vibe was a bit bright. Would be special during night with the lights low. Can not wait to return

Food: for two people we ordered, 2 starters, two mains (half portions), rice, Roti and the green papaya salad. It was too much food! I would recommend the pork hock and beef larb, both were delicious! Would not recommend the jungle curry. And the green papaya salad was okay, but very spicy & we like spice. The roti was cold, so not that great. I wish I had room to eat dessert! Service: when we were seated a waitress told us the special menu, it was quite short so I asked another waitress what the duck special was and there were two, so we were a bit confused because we were originally only old one. Later when others sat next to us, we overheard and the specials was much more than we were told. This was quite disappointing as we would have probably ordered something from it. Also, when making a reservation I said we were there for a birthday. They didn’t acknowledge it at all, so why ask for the information if you’re not doing anything with it? Drinks: cocktails were pretty good. I had the pandan espresso martin, it was okay.

It's been a while since I have been down Marshall Street, but I was surprised to find it is now full of boutique restaurants. Short Grain is right on the corner of McLachlan. When you first walk in, the feel of the place is quite modern. But even for a Wednesday night, this place was very busy. I'm not sure if it is the acoustics of the place or I'm just getting old, but this place was loud. Everyone was having a good time and you had to raise your voice and listen carefully to have a conversation. This might not be the place to come for a quite romantic dinner. They seem to be set up for bigger tables. The food was exceptional with almost everything on the menu being gluten free. They even use gluten free soy sauce. The service was a little slow. Our drinks came out after our entree was served, but the staff very friendly, professional and a little apologetic. Overall a great night.
