Four star review that I was hoping to be five - and it all starts at the burger. *Still keen to come back for the steak and oysters, hopefully with a better playlist.
Bad things: ✳️ Burger was a bit dry, which I believe came down to the bun lacking a lot of moisture, but at some points it also felt like the patty was lacking some moisture too. I’m not sure if they’re going for a traditional style I’m unaware of, but the patty would have been more enjoyable if it was smashed - It was a wagyu patty (so maybe it’s sac-religious to “smash” it) but it was hard to taste the wagyu through the occasional dryness in the burger. All other inclusions in the burger were nice and welcome (i.e. pickles, cheese etc.). ✳️ In summary, I expected the burger to be the best one I’d ever tasted, especially for the price, but it seems to be an oversight in the kitchen, which makes sense considering it being one of less dear items on the menu. ✳️ Music choice and volume - poor playlist choice and music was too loud, plus unbalanced as all of the speakers seem to be only on the window side of the restaurant. The playlist made me feel like I was in a pub in Mackay, which wasn’t what I was hoping for this setting, especially considering all of the surrounding competition, and their astounding music playlists. ✳️ Sauces are available but seemingly only on request: It was interesting to ask the staff for sauce (i.e. for the steak) which seemed to be readily available, but I was surprised that it wasn’t just offered while we were ordering initially.
Good things! ✳️ The Steak. The steak was unsurprisingly perfect and cooked to a nice rare. Because of the quality of the steak, it wasn’t chewy, and had great texture. It didn’t initially require sauce, but later we added some mushroom sauce, to add a bit of variation to the flavour palette. ✳️ The staff: All of the staff were kind and attentive, and stay out of your way - I think this is old school and nice, because you want to feel comfortable, and not like you are in THEIR way when in a restaurant like this. They also aren’t pushy to sell more 👏🏽. ✳️ The drinks. All of the accompanying drinks matched the high standard of the steak and the setting - it is nice to see they weren’t an oversight. Try the beer on tap too. ✳️ The interior. Wow, what a comfortable space to be in, we ate during the ex-cyclone-storm and you couldn’t even tell it was happening. The interior design itself was very pleasant and enjoyable to examine whilst eating and chatting, and the choice of seats was very comfortable.
We also had the lobster mac and cheese, and a dozen fresh oysters. I would go again with the oysters, but try a different pasta, similiar to the burger, I expected to be...
Read moreLeft disappointed after switch and bait tactics at SK Steak & Oyster for the advertised $85 Lobster menu last night. We had been planning a group trip to SK in the near future. When we saw their Lobster special appear on their instagram page and the article in the Courier Mail, myself and a friend decided we had to jump at the chance to check them out.
The instagram post says "We will be offering a 5 course lobster menu for $85". So I rang up and made a reservation for 2. Upon arrival we were seated quickly and the restaurant was very busy. It took them 15 to 20 mins for them to take our drinks order and we since we knew what we were having we told the waitress that we were having 2 of the Lobster specials. Which it turns out is actually a 4 course meal with sides, not 5 courses as initally suggested. And waitress ask if we would like to add a steak to our order, which we declined both thinking that was a little strange. But figured most businesses will try and up sell where they can.
A short time later a waitress brings over a single Lobster Tartar and a single Lobster Cocktail. It is a this point the penny drops and we are finally told that all the courses are to be shared. So nowhere on instagram post or the Courier Mail article is it mentioned that it is shared. I was not told when I rang up to make the booking. The menu when you get to the restaurant only states "Minimum of 2 persons / whole table only". When the waitress took our order we were not told it is to be shared.
The restaurant is very beautiful and elegant. And service was very good. The food as great as expected, although we couldnt work out why it was called a Lobster salad as there was no Lobster pieces or Lobster taste to it. But still it was tasty and accompanied the rest of the meal very well.
Half way through the meal we had already decided to skip desert and we were working out where to go and grab a bite eat as we were still hungry.
A great night spoiled by a feeling of being tricked into coming in the first place. Safe to say we will not be returning to SK Steak and Oyster. Would hate to order a couple of $100+ steaks only to find out we are...
Read moreDined at SK last night for my father’s 70th birthday. The restaurant was aware it was for a milestone birthday and were going to organise a candle with dessert. We sat at our table, had cocktails to start and spent some time reading the wine list and menu. The waiter asked us not long after sitting down if we were ready to order (which we weren’t). He came back a second time and told us that our table was only for two hours (by 8:15pm) and recommended we ordered soon. We felt a little rushed but we still ordered our entrees and mains as recommended. Ordered a bottle of red and not once, but twice the waiter brought a white wine. Entrees took a while to come but it was a busy night so I had no issues with that. We hadn’t received our mains yet and around 7.45pm were told the next table had been pushed back to 8:45pm so we were able to relax a bit more – really appreciated this. After receiving our mains, we finished around 8.30pm. Overall, the waitstaff were professional, ambience was great and food was tasty. What I am disappointed about is after our main plates were taken, the restaurant said we had to leave our table and if we wanted dessert, we had to order and eat the dessert from a stand up bar table tucked away in the back corner facing a wall. We didn't bother with dessert, what a way to kill the momentum. Two hour sittings came into place because of COVID and restrictions on the number of dine-in customers. It just seems these high end restaurants don’t really care about the experience anymore but instead, only about getting people in and out as quickly as possible. When I paid the bill and told the lady at the counter I was disappointed with how the night ended, she was apologetic but suggested next time I come back for the 8:30pm sitting as it’s more relaxed and there is no time limit. Perhaps my Dad will go back for his 80th birthday, but I suspect he will be asleep! Disappointing way to end the night, especially when you pay $850 for dinner and have previously dined...
