I was drawn to Khatun Mongolian by its impressive 4.9-star rating, but unfortunately, the food didnāt live up to the hype. I appreciate traditional food, but this felt more like style over substance.
The owner was genuinely kind and welcoming, and the decor is charming with Mongolian cultural touches ā including a little fortune-telling game that adds character. However, it felt like the focus was more on atmosphere than on the food itself.
We ordered a set platter featuring four items, but three of them used the exact same meat filling. The two types of khuushuur were virtually identical apart from shape. The noodles were decent, but paying $75 for a plate of flour-based items that all taste the same felt excessive.
The steak ā priced at $34 ā was a real letdown. When asked how Iād like my steak done, I said medium ā but what I got was half well-done and half medium-rare. It was extremely tough and hard to chew, served with a basic table knife that couldnāt cut through it. While the steak and potatoes were presented on a cast iron plate, the plate was cold, which completely missed the point. Some of the diced potatoes were even undercooked. And bacon? It didnāt feel like an authentic fit for traditional Mongolian cuisine.
The set was overloaded with starchy, dough-based dishes ā dumplings, fried bread, noodles ā making it far too heavy for two people. Yet if you order Ć la carte, each item still comes in a large portion, which makes the menu feel inflexible and poorly thought out.
We also tried the milk tea ā special touch but it was a bit watery.
The noise from kitchen is also annoying.
My best guess is that the high rating is largely due to the ownerās warm and hospitable service. Unfortunately, I wouldnāt recommend this place based...
Read moreKhatun Mongolian Restaurant completely exceeded our expectations. From the moment we walked through the door, we were greeted with warm smiles and genuine hospitality that instantly made us feel welcome. The ambiance is cozy yet stylish, with touches of traditional Mongolian décor that add to the authenticity and charm of the place.
The food was absolutely phenomenal. We tried a variety of dishes, including the Mongolian barbecue, lamb dumplings, and hot pot ā every single item was bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. The meat was tender and juicy, the vegetables were fresh, and the sauces added just the right amount of kick without overpowering the natural flavors. The portions were generous, and everything was beautifully presented.
What truly sets Khatun apart is the attention to detail and the passion that clearly goes into every aspect of the dining experience. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable and took the time to explain the dishes and make recommendations based on our tastes. They even shared a bit about the cultural significance of some meals, which made the experience even more special.
Itās clear that Khatun Mongolian Restaurant isnāt just about great food ā itās about creating a memorable experience. Whether youāre new to Mongolian cuisine or already a fan, this place is a must-visit. We left feeling full, satisfied, and eager to return. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. This restaurant truly deserves all the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreKhatun Mongolian Restaurant is an absolute delight! From the moment you step inside, the cozy ambiance and friendly staff make you feel right at home. The menu is a treasure trove of authentic Mongolian flavors, with each dish bursting with freshness and depth. The lamb dishes are particularly tender and flavorful, and the stir-fried noodles are a must-try. But the real stars of the show are their horhog and goulash! The horhog is a traditional Mongolian feast cooked with succulent meat (usually lamb or goat) and vegetables, steamed to perfection with hot stones. Itās a unique and hearty dish that transports you straight to the Mongolian steppes. The flavors are rich, smoky, and utterly satisfying. As for the goulash, itās a comforting bowl of tender meat, slow-cooked in a savory broth with a perfect blend of spices. Itās warm, hearty, and perfect for anyone craving a taste of Central Asian comfort food. Whether you're a local or just visiting Surfers Paradise, this place is a must-visit for anyone who loves hearty, delicious...
