I did the right thing of making an online reservation as it was the Royal Hobart Show weekend and I wanted to ensure I would not be disappointed or put the staff in the awkward position of declining service to a patron. Had to order meal at the bar and get a number for the table. This was very similar to what happens at a good RSL club. No wait staff, the bar staff was convivial and assisted efficiently. This should have been the first red flag for a restaurant that charges over $40 for lamb or steak meals. Ordered the slow-cooked lamb shanks and was hoping to have a hardy meal after a long day of trekking in the coldish spring day at Salamanca Markets. It cost me $50 for my main and a cider. I have no problem with paying for a good meal and the ambiance of a place could help with the dining experience. The flat ware should be the second red flag. It was reminiscent of flat ware picked up at a discount variety store, that would be perfect for a child first leaving home for a new apartment rental. The majority of the meal had been heated up to a just above luke warm temperature. The lamb shank meat came off the bone just as it should but was more cool than a soothing heated meal for a chilly evening. The "honey and rosemary jus" was a claggy orangy/brown paste on the shank. The "...silky mashed potatoes" were buried under the shank retaining very little heat. The only satisfying aspect of the meal was the cauliflower - it was quite nice - but it is very hard to hang all appreciation on a meal that doesn't even mention the highlight. I regret my decision of not seeking another place for an over priced slightly warm meal or as Embers call it - "Tasmanian...

We started with drinks here and that was most pleasant. It was buzzing as the place seems quite popular. We moved on to dinner in the adjacent dining room. I had the pork cutlet with asparagus, potatoes and brie wrapped in prosciutto. OK, the presentation (and the menu) is a bit 80s but I couldn’t care less to be frank. I found the food very tasty. The cutlet was delicious, the prosciutto and brie lovely and the asparagus beautifully cooked. I enjoyed it very much. Others enjoyed their dishes too. The cheese platter to finish was a beauty. It was a very good size with mighty good slices of hard, soft and blue cheeses with ample biscuits and a lovely selection of fruits, nuts and other goodies as well. I’ve been served with half the amount and lesser quality for twice the price. So, I thought the platter was a cracker.
The cream on top here is the staff. They were all utterly delightful. Young, energetic and hard working. Polite, knowledgable and very efficient as well. All four or five of the front of restaurant staff are a credit to the restaurant and the hotel.
I liked it here and so did my colleagues. I would very happily return and...
Read moreEnjoyed our dinner at Embers. The staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. I appreciated the chef coming and checking we were happy with our meals. The waitress was attentive. The meals were excellent, good value, generously sized, plated well, tasty and arrived quickly. The menu had variety. After eating elsewhere in Hobart the previous two nights and feeling utterly ripped off and finding many places with absurdly poor menus including no steak or lamb I was relieved I chose Embers. I also enjoyed a buffet breakfast there. They have a good value varied lunch too (including steak sandwich, scallop chicken parmie, carbonara and fish and chips and more), but we were out during the day unfortunately. If in Hobart I recommend you avoid the terrible tourist trap restaurants at Salamanca Place and eat at Embers,...
