My wife and I dined at Luz last night. Cute little place, quiet and relaxed ambiance, two very friendly and attentive wait staff. Menu is fairly small but still felt like plenty of options. Good list of local wines. We had the scallaps to start, which were delicious. Great flavour balance. We then had the wallaby with cauliflower puree, onion and jus and the market fish - blue eyed trevally with beurre blanc, pearl barley and corn. The wallaby was good, absolutely no complaints but the standout was the fish. Truly incredible flavour, texture and balance.

Now, we'd read some of the other reviews here about the chef's strong reaction to feedback and were curious - and not disappointed. Not long after we arrived and ordered, the chef came out to address some feedback that the fish was so dry as to be inedible. He was polite but strained at first, in explaining that two other patrons ordered the fish at the same time, cooked in the same pan and loved it, so she would have to pay for the fish rather than have it taken off the bill. She said, fine, I just won't eat then, and he offered to make her some popcorn (which is the free appetiser they bring out before the food). He turned to leave, she muttered something under her breath that I couldn't make out, and he clapped back. Told her she had come with an attitude all night, rolled her eyes at him, poked her tongue out and been rude, so she could leave the restaurant. He then went back to the kitchen. She stayed with her friends for a bit, who all proceeded to finish their meals before paying and leaving. Not gonna lie, was a bit awkward.

However, as we realised later - there is no other fish dish on the menu than the one we ordered, which straight up was the best fish dish we've had this year. So I honestly can't work out what she would've had to complain about. Chef came out to us after we'd finished our meal and was stoked we liked it so much and was quite polite to us. Just seems really passionate about his food and wants to be treated with respect.

So all in all, giving it 5 stars for great food, lovely wait staff, and a show...

Craziest, rudest chef in the business by sure! I'd you want to be confronted and insulted by the chef, go to Luz! We walked in last night. It was so quiet, and ambient, we kept our voices down and the hostess was fantastic. Some people came in and thought they had booked but possibly hadn't and the chef came out and told them (throwing his arms up) that they didn't book there! We had pork belly and wallaby. They were great but when asked by the lovely lady host I mentioned that the only disappointment was that the crackle on the pork belly wasn't very crackly. She said she would tell the chef........well, some time later whilst we were paying the bill,we asked if the chef was ok and we're told he was having a bad night, then the chef came out of the kitchen holding up my empty plate and loundly asking'who complained about the pork belly but ate it all?' ( this was to all the dining room) my partner said that it was mine and he ate the rest of the crackle because I didn't want it. Next........ He loudly said that ' the fat barsted are it's ( I was getting my bag from the table and came back to the counter) and said' I'm sorry, did you just call him a fat barsted???' to which the chef added that ' yes and he looks like he just got out of jail' I calmly said " are you serious right now?' the chef repeated both insults while my partner just looked at him. I told him he can't run a business like this, where is the customer service. I grabbed my other half and said 'lets go'. I then turned to the dining room and appoligised to everyone for a small comment getting...

Gosh where to I start, from the vibrant warm and classy atmosphere to the welcome you get upon your arrival and the tailored service (prior to serving any food checking if the dining party has any dietary or other requirements etc which I think all restaurants should do) The waitress Nicole is so attentive to your needs. Where do we start with the food, I have some dietary requirements etc and the restaurant was so accommodating, I certainly didn’t expect the food that came out oh my gosh my mouth was watering for more it was that delightful. The combination of flavours/tastes in every meal is devine and matches the palate of that particular dish perfectly. The chef should be commended on his menu selection.

The way the food was presented to the way the food tasted was seriously on par with a michelin star restaurant let alone a 5 star restaurant. Definitely a hidden gem of Launceston worth visiting.

The layout of the restaurant is spacious enough, the restaurant and the atmosphere it offers simply goes with the location it picked.

The restaurant had a good selection of food from entree, mains and desserts

The food was lick the plate delicious.

The chef also comes out to personally make sure everything is okay.

It’s perfectly situated to in a lovely historic building within minutes walking distance from the heart of Launceston.

The prices are affordable as well.

Definitely be visiting...

Running out of eats to try in Launceston, we decided to try the Luz Restaurant and we came away saying this is possibly the best dining experience in Launceston. The atmosphere was great, no loud reveberations like some in Launceston, and you can actually listen and talk. Entree was white wine poached oysters, and it was delicious. The white wine sauce was scrumptious and I gobbled every bit of that sauce. We both had braised ox cheeks in red wine jus for mains. The cheeks were absolutely soft and melted in our mouths. My wife commented that in many places, the vegetables were an after thought. But not at the Luz. Accompanying the ox cheeks were polenta and dutch carrots. Both were done excellent. In fact, one would often find polenta a little gritty, but not here. Smooth. We also ordered side dishes of potato (fried with paprika and sea salt) and broccolini (charred with hummus, kale and dukkah), and both were cooked to perfection. The dukkah was perfect on the broccolini. Desert was Pavlova roulade with raspberry sauce and fresh strawberries. Again, it was joy and delight. In fact, it absolutely no trouble for the staff when I asked if they could add vanilla bean ice cream to my dessert. We totally recommend Luz as a fine dining restaurant and one definitely in respect of the atmosphere, and the service provided. The chef even walked around and had a chat with customers.
