I came to this restaurant a couple of weeks ago with dear friends who were visiting from out of town. One of the party was a manager of a five star restaurant, the other the owner of a successful cafe, and I myself have worked for years in hospitality in the UK when I was younger, including in luxury golf clubs. We went to Stelo because we heard the restaurant was one of the best in Launceston. My friend had two assistance dogs with him, and these were duly mentioned when the table was booked. However, once we got to the restaurant, our party was treated with utter disrespect on account of the service dogs. The dogs were kept under the table so they weren't in anybody's way, however, the manager of the restaurant came over to our table and started demanding to 'see paperwork' to confirm the dogs' legitimacy as service dogs!!! My friend attempted to explain to her that the service dog harness is all that is needed to guarantee their legitimacy, but the manager wasn't satisfied. She argued with my friend, who was devastated and embarrassed, and who ended up producing a letter from the Department of Justice in which it stated that his dogs were service dogs and entitled to be taken anywhere in Tasmania. He didn't need to do that, as it shouldn't have even been necessary. She still didn't seem happy with it, and accused my friend of threatening her when he tried to explain that it's a thousands of dollars fine for pretending that dogs are service dogs when they're not. The whole scene was ugly, humiliating, unnecessarily aggressive, and REALLY bad customer service. Despite the manager grudgingly consenting to let us stay in her restaurant, we were all so appalled at her behaviour and attitude that we left. It ruined our evening. Such an appalling way to treat someone with a disability. I wholeheartedly DO NOT RECOMMEND this restaurant, it is badly run and the manager should really consider training herself up on how to communicate with her...
Read moreMy partner and I booked our dinner for 6:15. When we arrived we were seated after a short wait. This then followed another 10 or so minute wait to receive our menu so we could begin thinking of what to order.
When we did receive our menu we were well explained what was on offer and we were also provided some flexibility for the set menu with the allowance to include the nights special main in place of the set item at no extra charge - an offer we accepted.
Our first snack came out after a short wait. Popcorn cauliflower - nice flavours, perhaps a tartare or garlic aioli would elevate this to a classic.
Our first entre was burrata with bread and peaches. The bread had delicious salty crust that perhaps was a little too salty, but well balanced with the creamy cheese and sweet peaches.
Then came out pumpkin ravioli - an absolutely smashing dish. I could eat this for years. A generous portion for something that isn't the main dish and an awesome balance of savory house made pamersan and sweet pumpkin puree that had an nice sweet acidic flavour.
It was after this dish that we noticed that it was now quite late in the evening. Between the ravioli and our mains we waited 45minutes. My partner had seared tuna - the special for the night - and I had roasted rump cap. My partner very much enjoyed her dish, and while mine was cooked well, it felt a little meh.
Another seemingly substantial wait ensued and we received our dessert. I had the tiramisu and for something that seemed to just be cut out of a larger piece and put on a plate, the wait felt very long compared to the effort put into the plating, however it was quite nice.
All in all we had nice food, our service was good, albeit a little slow. If you plan to have the tasting menu, I recommend ensuring that you have 3hrs set aside as our booking was for 6:15 and we left just before 9pm.
Compliments to the young curly haired wait staff as they were especially kind and...
