Today was my first time at Middletown and though the food and coffee were good, the lack of welcome has put me off returning here. This morning I called to book a table for 6 for brunch at 11am, specifying that we were 6 mums with young (less than 6 month old) babies and would likely have a number of prams with us. I wanted to warn them as felt this was only fair to the staff as understand that such a big group could make things logistically complicated. I was told they didnāt take reservations during the week, and that weād work it out when we all arrived. When we arrived we were directed to a table that was not only separate from the rest of the clientĆØle but also impossible to access, especially with prams. It was the sortāve table you might put two couples wanting an intimate chat, not a group of mums that needed to be able to get in and out easily to stand up and settle/change their kid, or even simply be able to keep the pram nearby. Even those with carriers struggled to find room to sit. Donāt get me wrong, I understand a group with prams is tricky to manage, but considering that the venue has a big open plan layout Iād have thought we were relatively easy to accommodate for, especially since Iād called hours earlier and my friend had left a voicemail about this yesterday. To be placed as such despite the rest of the cafĆ© being mostly empty, made us feel incredibly unwelcome. Not to mention that the staff didnāt check in on us once after the first order was placed, and the plates were not removed once weād finished either. Quite frankly, I wonāt...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMiddletown continues to evolve with a great menu and consistent coffee.
Winter 2022 menu brings familiar, but still tasty, fare to the cafe including the following items:
Pressed Lamb - Juicy and tender lamb shoulder flavoured with onion, garlic and pressed into a neat parcel rests on a bed of spiced Turkish rice. A simple, lightly dressed bean tendril salad, with slivers of pickled onion, helped to balance the unctuous flavours from the lamb and rice that also paired well with the lemon dill yogurt. Thoroughly enjoyable and feels like a warm hug.
Beef burger - Generously sized burger with all the typical trappings including bacon, American cheese, and a special house-made sauce. The ground beef patty is well seasoned and succulent with hints of garlic and paprika. Paired with crispy chips dusted with the secret house seasoning, a very well put together burger that didn't disappoint.
(Winter 2021) is absolutely delicious and I have tasted (and highly recommend!):
Steak frites - Perfectly cooked, flavourful and tender rump steak with a delicious - but ultimately not neessary - peppercorn sauce and logs of crunchy and fluffy chips.
Chicken burger - ASMR-friendly crispy coated fried chicken with a tangy 'slaw. Southern-style flavours and well seasoned chicken a true delight.
Croque Madame - Wonderfully decadent sandwich that will put you in a food coma - only remedied by their expertly...

I ordered fries 10 mins before and they still came out cold with our meals, instead of earlier. My husband pancakes we ok, just ok, very thin, flavour ok, nothing wow, recipe needed the work. Presentation lovely, but thatās about it. My brother in law and partner ordered the pancakes and some eggs. Both meals were all cold and lack lustre. Coffee and service was lovely, no issues there. It was all about the terrible food.
My French toast was horrible. Looked nice, tasted like nothing. The toast was, exactly that, toast. Not soaked, no flavour, the pear was not poached it was rock hard the stone fruit terrible, hard and no flavour. Itās meant to be French toast. Delish and moorish instead just bread - serially awful. We wonāt be back. We spent $126.50 for 4 people and with a surcharge this was NOT worth a revisit. Iām just really disappointed as I read all these great reviews and my food was horrible, I could have made...
