Paiks Noodles is that one late night joint you wanna be at when craving for some hot korean food. Think Gochujang and Jjampong... And head straight to 470 Little Lonsdale Street, Melbourne.
Open till 400am, and named after the Korean rockstar chef Jon-won Paik, this noodles place has 2000 other locations worldwide.
The menu is a one page offering 11 amazing delights showing all signature highlights such as Tang-suyuk : deep-fried pork and vegetables served alongside Paik’s famed sweet and sour sauce.
Another Korean delight featured is Jamppong which is spicy seafood noodle soup paired with pork and crisp fresh vegetables ,or jjampong's stir-fried sister, bokkeum jjamppong.
For the gutsy ones, and really apt for your mukbang reels, pick the extra hot Gochu Jajang, simple but spicy black bean noodles rich with umami flavour.
And lastly Feel the heat with gochu jjamppong, a fiery chilli broth slow simmered with vegetables, mussels and chewy noodles, or level up and opt for a carb-loaded rice feast option instead, gochu ljamppong-bap.
The Noodles are handmade and super fresh as they are made in house. The decor is super simple but spacious and inviting. There is dining space upstairs to, so if you are a big group, you can easily be accommodated. As you get seated, the friendly staff offer you a chill water bottle for the table and pickled radishes and onions. Each table has its own little self help drawer section which houses a range of vinegar and Chilli oils and chop stick and cutlery packs. I really enjoyed this little personal feature and something unique to this restaurant.
I realised recently that Chef Paik Jong-won leads a Korean food empire, with more than 2,000 restaurants, 5 million YouTube subscribers and several TV shows under his belt. And Melbourne is not new for him, as there already exists a Korean barbecue version called Paik's BBQ.
Even though the tastes were super unique and not something I'd tasted before, it was really a delight to be here and enjoy the warm hospitality of the team and their prompt service. Will highly recommend this place for all you Korean cuisine...
Read morePAIK's NOODLE in Lt. Lonsdale St in Melbourne CBD is the place to go right now to satisfy your cravings for Korean-style noodles! Created by none other than celebrity chef and TV sensation Paik Jong-won, this restaurant serves the best Jjang-myeon we have tried thus far, yummm! • What we ordered: Bokkeum Jjampong (Stir fried spicy noodles) Jjamppong (Spicy noodle soup with pork, squid, mussels and vegetables) Jjang-myeon (black bean sauce noodles) Gochu Jajang (Spicy black bean sauce noodles with chilli peppers) Tangsuyuk (Deep-fried sweet & sour pork) Gonchu Yuringi (Deep-fried chicken topped with sweet & sour sauce and hot chilli peppers) • To start with both the deep-fried chicken and pork were excellent! The pork meat was tender & juicy, covered in a delightfully sweet and tangy sauce, yumm! The deep-fried slices of chicken strips were so addictive, you get a tingling sensation on every bite with that hot chilli peppers! So so good! We ended up ordering another plate for both dishes 😲 • Jjamppong (Spicy noodle soup with pork, squid, mussels and vegetables) was lovely! It was loaded with pork, seafood and fresh veggies and if you are a fan of spicy food then this is a must-order here. The richly flavoured seafood broth, balanced with the sweetness of pork and veggies, so so good! Perfect bowl of noodles for chilly weather here in Melbourne. • Bokkeum Jjampong (Stir fried spicy noodles) tasted so familiar but yet very authentic, reminded us so much of the street-food style stir fry noodles we have back in Indonesia 🤤 • But the stars must be Jjang-myeon (both the normal & the spicy version). The black bean sauce was well-balanced, yet packed a big punch. The house-made fresh noodles cooked to perfection, make sure you mix well to ensure all the noodles coated in that flavorful sauce. The spicy version was very interesting and if you are spicy-food addict then this is the bowl of noodle is perfect. • Overall, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend this restaurant. The quality to the price ratio is amazing, the best Jjang-myeon we have tried thus far. Can't wait to come back and...
Read moreFirst time here. I always get nervous about celebrity theme restaurants. They tend to be either really good or really bad.
So.. I waited in a small line waiting outside in the cold so I was hoping for some good food. Now, I've tried many Korean noodle speciality restaurants before so I was able to compare.
After trying for myself, I thought to myself. How did the other reviews get rated so highly. Did I get the dishes on it's bad day?
Anyway, I ordered the Jajangmyeon (Noodles with Black Bean Sauce), sweet and sour pork (Tangsuyuk) and the chili on fried chicken.
Jajangmyeon - Luke warm. Noodles were good and springy. The sauce composition itself was weak and felt diluted. The overall taste just didn't give you the impact you would hope. Also felt like just slurping starch. Seems like the starch ratio vs the ingredients isn't right to me.
Similar feeling towards the Tangsuyuk. Sloppy and lack the crispiness - understand the sauce would affect it but it's felt like a slightly sweet mix of water and starch. The batter was occasionally hard and the meat itself was quite random in texture. The overall taste just underwhelming.
At this point, I was quite disappointed. My last dish I tried was the chili on top with fried chicken pieces. Finally... A dish that makes sense and works. The chili was fresh and tasty on the decently fried chicken. Lettuce with the dressing and everything in one mouthful was great.
In summary, I do understand the first two dish didn't have any heat. Taking that aside, they were still weak in every aspect when I compared with the same dishes I've tried at other Korean restaurants. Disappointing experience but you never know until you tried. Not worth the hype at all.
Also, I should have tried the seafood noodles instead but won't be coming back
Wish you guys...
