My Bayon — Restaurant in Northbridge

The good the bad and the ugly. The good, the food here is absolutely exceptional, it is fantastic. Out of a group of seven everyone loved it, including one of our friends who is a well respected chef. If you haven’t experienced it, you must as a matter of priority. Absolutely amazing work. Let’s start with five stars for the food alone.

The bad, the service was far from ideal, I felt as if the staff were in need of significantly more training and perhaps a good dose of common sense. Two of them stood there staring at us for quite some time, we had to intervene and remind them that we still had a dessert course to come. Clearing the table they asked guests to pass them their dishes. Now we know this isn’t fine dining but entry level pub grade table service is expected. Minus one star.

Wine, one of our group made the mistake of buying a bottle of wine at the restaurant, everyone thought it was terrible, described as vinegar like, one of our group is an experienced wine critic and was forced to spit it out. I’ve never seen him do that before. I suspect no one sampled the wine before they decided to stock it. Be sure to BYO Minus one star

The sneaky merchant fee. Our meals were $71 a head, we paid separately, much appreciated, Six of us paid by card, not one of us knew that we were being charged for a merchant fee even on a debit card. The terminal displayed $71. I put my card on there and it took 72 and a bit dollars, I did not authorise that. As a restaurant owner, you’re not willing to pay 0.7% fee but you think it’s okay for your terminal provider to make the big $$ and hit your customers 1.6%. That is the absolute maximum permitted, poor negotiation on behalf of the owner. Not only does this create a bitter taste for customers it’s actually illegal, customers must be aware you are on charging your merchant fee to them. I always carry cash Minus one star.

In all, we will be back at some stage with BYO, a low expectation of service and of course pay cash, we are looking forward to it.

Let me reiterate the food is absolutely to die for, that is the absolute attraction here. Highest compliments to the chef and kitchen team. You guys make this place great. Please check it...

2021 Just as delicious and lovely as last time. We tried the Noodle Tuesday special for $15 for a noodle and soft drink, and got the Lort Cha. It was my first time ever trying that kind of noodle, and it was so good! The noodles were short and stubby with a tapered end, similar to shimeji mushrooms. The texture was very soft and smooth, with a slight chew. Also tried the Amok curry with barramundi, the flavours were great. One serving of steamed rice is enough for two. Would definitely come back! 2019 Lovely decorated cosy venue, friendly staff, super tasty food! Tried the Five Spice Braised Pork (limited availability) and it was perfect, super tender sticky skin, delicious sauce, plenty of vegetables underneath. Serving size was large, enough for 3 people. Jasmine rice serving sizes are also quite large, served in a cute coconut bowl. Came back to try other dishes, the stuffed chicken wings had an insanely delicious glaze. Highly recommend. Laksa was super tasty, though next time I'd just get the vegetarian version, as the toppings for Combination Laksa were quite bland and didn't add much. They have specials on Mon - Wed which look great, will be back to try...

If I sum up my experience here in one word, it will have to be this… amazing! 🤩

Attention to detail is the name of the game that will bring this restaurant to greater fame! The waitress who served me was polite and knew the menu very well, offering the specials of the day; a lemon grass fried chicken and durian with sticky rice (both of which were exquisite!)

Ordered tonight was:

Cocktail - Ankor Sunrise: delicious with a bit of bite from turmeric and ginger

Cocktail - Khmer Pina Colada: beautiful blend of rum with the standard coconut cream and pineapple 🍍

Their fried tofu dish - stir fried tofu with bean sprouts in a light soy sauce. Simple ingredients but done to perfection; bean sprouts tasting super fresh! Tofu was fresh too!

Beef stir fry with a sour sauce was super yummy! I can’t fault the taste! Tender beef stir fried with onions dipped into that amazing sauce sent me to heaven!

Durian sticky rice with ice cream was delectable!
