At first I was very intrigued by this place as it had beautiful decor, lighting, ambiance and sound. As well as a large selection of beautifully made food and drinks. Although... After a few times going to this bar I began to notice the managers being very unkind, demotivating and generally rude to their staff. This will easily create fear and angst among the workers making it harder for them to work efficiently and with confidence. The manager saw that I was getting upset by the way he was treating his staff, and would often stand around my table to see if I was talking about their service. So i kept giving him deathstares as a way to kind of tell him to leave us alone. When the food came it tasted slightly different compared to the last time that I had ordered it at that bar. That night I ended up with a really nasty case of food poisoning, and I had only eaten fruit and felt perfectly okay through out the day. I suspect that the manager may have had something to do with it but I can't assume that for sure. But weather it was him or not, I still ended up with food poisoning after eating out at the Bar Cleveland.
If any one from the Bar is reading this, please assure your manager that there are certain equity standards that legally must be met when it comes to the way you handle your staff and customers, and you are taking a great financial risk by treating people the way you do. Also I can guarantee you that if you start treating your staff appropriately, that your productivity, atmosphere, revenue and overall satisfaction will be greatly improved. It also might help to lower your staff turn over rates meaning you get more 'Bar Cleveland accustomed' staff, meaning you waste less time on training new people...
Read moreI've had a good, solid, reliable four-star performance out of Bar Cleveland over the years. Been stopping by here for the occasional mid-day shandy since, what, 2010 or so?
The main draw for me is the outdoors people-watching table on the corner. But the interior has preserved the authentic old-school character that used to make Surry Hills, Redfern and Waterloo such interesting places. They aren't making any more of these, so get it while you still can.
Bar Cleveland's quiet and peaceable during the day. Friendly staff. Clean loo. Plenty of space. Conveniently located between the Oxford Street shops and the southeast Redfern shopping district.
Well worth your visit.
(Ah! One last thought. Can't say what it's like at midnight on Fridays - your mileage may vary.)
Missy The Cat Star Ratings:
5 - a place of rare genius that merits repeated return visits
4 - a strong effort with no major shortcomings
3 - a solid, worthy effort with perhaps one important thing to fix
2 - several important things wrong, but at least one important thing right
1 - can't be given a zero, doesn't deserve a dollar (as of...
Read moreI had my two kids' joint birthday party here last Sunday afternoon in the Heritage Room upstairs, and it turned out to be a great success! We had about 50 guests including adults and 4-8 yrs old of kids and the venue was great and spacious for the crowd. Staff here is amazing. All the communication and coordination for the party preparations went very smoothly between me and the bar Function Managers Josh and Jimmy, and the bar girl (sorry I forgot the name) who looked after our drink orders at the event was very kind and helpful too. It was nearly a hustle-free birthday party. Kids all had a blast watching a movie on the big projector screen after cake cutting, while adults could sit back in the same room to relax and enjoy the catch-up with some adult drinks! ;-) I can't recommend the bar enough which seems to be suitable for all kinds of event and for a wide range of ages. We'll definitely come back for...
