I want to preface this review and give Masala the benefit of the doubt for their lack-lustre service for tonight.

As me and my friend both made our way to their door there was no one to greet us nor let us know to wait as they looked to very busy (which is understandable but only to an extent). Standing there and not being told a simple "Sorry for waiting, we'll be with you as quickly as possible" just made me feel like I was on a stranded island. When a waiter directed us to our table, everything was fine in regards to that side of service.

Now the table service. We originally had a waitress serve us, but after noticing a small bucket of utensils that wasn't filled properly as well as not bringing cups with the big container of water, I had to remind her. They were given in a timely manner. However, after inspecting the glasses, both of them were visibly dirty and not cleaned properly. You didn't even need to hold them to a light. I let her know, and I got what I assumed was a new pair of glasses (I say assume because they originally gave me and my friend a green and transparent cup. They gave us the same coloured glasses after I requested new ones).

After all of this, we had a very tall waiter who overtook her responsibilities. After being served by him, everything went smoothly.

We ordered 2 servings of Naan (garlic and normal), Laal maans, butter chicken, and rice. In terms of food, it was amazing. Butter chicken as well as the Laal maans was nothing short of excellent. Their naan is, of course, made to order, you can tell.

The only criticism that I can fault them on is the portion size of the curries that they serve. The bowls that the curries are in are around 8-10cm in diameter (in terms of volume/height of the bowl, it was nothing abnormal). $25-$28 (depending on what you order) of ONE curry in one of those bowls seemed a bit unfortunate. Regardless, outside of that, the food is spot on.

tl;dr

Masala needs to put more resources into service and management. Their food is good albiet the curry is a bit small for how much you're spending.

Convinced all reviews here are false Absolutely pathetic bad quality staff Saw the disgusting kitchen and the unsanitary conditions of cooking Staff didn’t give me a plate / spoons / napkin - had to get up myself to go ask for it Food is so below average and the whole meal cost me $112 for 2 mains and 2 entrees , quantity was so less too

I need a refund!

The below is a new edit based on the “feedback” from the restaurant

Thanks for saying sorry about the plates and cutlery. It’s safe to say that’s the last thing someone would expect in a restaurant, I would rather have done a takeaway. It was also water by the way. There was zero service.

Like the sarcasm in pointing out how I should have the common sense to add up the bill, which I obviously can. What my review is about is the horrible taste and even small horrible QUANTITY, which in no way justifies the price. You are ripping people off! And I have the right to say that!

Regarding the kitchen, just because you’re in business 16 years doesn’t mean I can’t point out facts. Yes the kitchen was extremely dirty. I asked for cutlery , after which the staff cleaned the dirty spoons from the kitchen sink for 0.3 seconds in front of my eyes and brought it to me. Isn’t hair suppose to be covered while cooking? I can point out a 100 things I noticed but this is my observation along with my families who all saw this!

I would have spoken to your staff about the horrible food had they even had the time! My mom in law is 60 years old , got up, fetched napkins and a glass for my coke from the counter and fridge.

DO NOT justify your horrible food and service on customers and turn it back on me

I have photos of the whole incident and yes after this terrible response, I am going to be take serious steps and actions.

YOU NEED TO BE INSPECTED by the necessary authorities for the unsanitary conditions of your food handling!

Instead of apologising , you double down!

Negative stars on this restaurant if I could

We were looking for something different to try and came across Masala Kitchen. No regrets having tried this place and a nice option for something different at this end of town.

Key highlights: Located on street level, the restaurant is along Pitt St and is on the outer part of World Square. Easily accesible by public transport - light rail, buses, train or metro. Do note that World Square is located in between Central station & Town Hall station (for trains) or Gadigal (for metro). When entering the restaurant, there is a clear sign indicating a waiting area to be seated by the staff. The staff are pretty friendly. Orders are placed with them. Initially, we were informed that they didn't have any Thali left. When they heard that both of us actually wanted to order the Thali, they obliged and prepared it. Also, they also accommodated an alternate veg curry to suit what we could eat. It didn't take them too long to prep our food and serve it. The food was delish, and I personally liked the butter chicken curry and gulab jamun. The roti (a replacement to the naan that typically comes with the meal) was decent, and all curries complemented the other. Flavours and spice levels were good. A noticeable thing was that the amount of rice provided is lesser than other places I have tried thali before. Similarly, it would have been nice too to have more than 3 curries and larger portions. The place was clean and loved the decor. Music played added to the ambience and was at a volume that quiet conversations could still take place. The artwork and decor were tastefully done and felt like enhanced the dining experience. They have alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks available. There is complementary table water available as well. They accept both cash or card.

I would come back here to try out...

Take away. 2 rotis 1 bindhi which is okra and 1 raitha which is supposed to be spiced yogurt with at least onions and tomatoes. Ordered and paid for 2 rotis. But got only 1. My mistake probably in that I should have checked before picking up. But in my defence it was just 3 items. So guessed they were competent enough to prepare 3 items. My bad. Don’t want to call them cheats just because it happened once. Actually the first and only time I ordered from them. Got chilli flakes as I wanted medium spice. Don’t know what I would get if I wanted spicy food. No actual spice in the food. More chilli flakes??The rotis were no where close to how rotis should be. The raita had minimal to no veggies (it is supposed to have onions, tomatoes may be cucumbers in case you are wondering). I ended up drinking it like you would a lassi (google it if you don’t now what it means). If you don’t know what Indian should be or taste like you would probably be happy with this place. The quantities they provide in no way and I mean in absolutely no way justify the cost. The Apple in pic is mine by the way. Not what I got from the restaurant. Just to give you an idea of the quantity.
