To start off, I love ramen and have been to many many ramen restaurants in Australia and overseas. Though there are many different ramen variation they do share an unmistakable ‘ramen taste/flavour’. In Menya we ordered their Menya Ramen and Chef’s Recommendation Hakata Tonkatsu Ramen. Firstly the staff didn’t quite able to explain the difference between the two ramen. We need to help out by adding words into his sentence. The tonkatsu broth was supposed to be thicker but it turned out the Menya has a more bony taste. The biggest disappointment is both broth are very light, nothing close to any ramen broth I had taken. The be clear, the broth are very tasty BUT it’s not ramen broth. If they selling these noodles as an Asian Soupy Noodle dish, I will give it 4 star as it’s tasty but saying it’s ramen, is not quite right. Also the pieces of pork belly are sliced very thinly, tasty but lacking the mouth feel like their competitor. Overall I went away quite disappointed that this is not ‘true’ ramen, it’s just a tasty Asian noodle dish. For comparison, every ramen lover in Sydney should try Gumshara, Yasaka, Hakata Maru, Ryo or Zundo. Their ramen are some of the best I have taken. It’s disappointing that I have to give Menya 2 star, hopefully the owner can review or re-look at what constitute a good bowl of ramen.

A few weeks ago I visited this place. It was a long time coming, because it's the head sister chain of my current favourite ramen restaurant, Goku ramen which is based in Glebe. So of course, at some point I had to visit here, the place where it all begun. I was delighted to see 1 person seats, which was close to the very open entrance. It's always positive to see 1 person eating areas for people who eat by themselves often like myself. I ordered the chef's special, Kushiro Shoyu Ramen, normally I go for basic ramen flavours but when you're visiting Menya you know going all out is what you're there for. The flavours of the ramen, the mix of seafood soup light soy base danced with the combination of chicken broth that was for the base of such a delicious and delightful bowl of ramen. The noodles tasted good, the soup was amazing. It was light but it wasn't heavy, but there was a flavour pow of goodness in every slurp of the broth. Just as it says, a mild and smooth taste. I definitely tasted both those important traits. If you're looking for a nearby CBD ramen spot with a vast selection of top notch ramens to choose from all in the range of regular ramen pricing, look no further than Menya. I mean really, it's right across the street 😄

2 years ago, I went to the Menya in Chinatown and remember it being quite mediocre, so when I tried the Hakata Tonkotsu Ramen here shortly after, I was blown away. The broth was very refreshing and flavourful, the noodles were addictive and the meat was just insanely soft and melts in your mouth. I would have highly recommended this place, but... I had another ramen here after 2 years, this time the menya mega ramen. The chashu meat was still great and melted in my mouth, but the broth was so salty that the saltiness drowned out almost any other flavour. Given that it was supposed to be the tonkotsu broth, I also didn't taste much of the pork fat in the broth. As I was eating it I wondered if the chef taste tested the broth at all before serving. After the meat was gone, I didn't enjoy the ramen at all. Overall, I had two wildly different experiences, so I'm going to give it 3* for the inconsistency in quality.

This is just a personal experience of mine, so it may not happen to you, but during the time I ate at this restaurant, I found the experience very unpleasant. This does not affect the quality of the food, it was great! It tasted good and looked appealing. I am a student, and together with my friends we decided to eat there. We arrived very early because we wanted to avoid the lunch queue. We waited for about half an hour. Everyone else in the restaurant was getting served with their food. We noticed another group of students like us, who were still waiting for their food. The restaurant was slowly getting more crowded and more people were getting served, except for us. When I called a waiter and questioned her, in a respectful manner, about our food, she simply rolled her eyes, and told us that she would check for us. My friends and I felt very uncomfortable about this waiter's attitude, we felt a little afraid that we did something bad. Anyways five minutes later our food arrived. After that we were late for our afternoon plans. The food was actually very good. It tasted good and the...
