I dropped in for breakfast today and was very pleasantly surprised. I ordered poached eggs and bacon on toast from a waitress (no, I'll never use that ghastly term waitperson). I complimented her on her lovely welcoming smile (I'll probably go to hell for that one too), and that clearly cheered her. I ordered fresh OJ and was offered today's juice, orange and apple, which I accepted.
I toddled off to my table to read the news on my phone. Note to the establishment - having a paper to read would have been great. I mentioned that in passing later to my daughter who said "that's just for old farts", to which I replied "and your point is?) I'm 71
Anyhow the meal came. Coupla points. The eggs were perfect, but a little small. The sourdough was beautiful, having been touched with real charcoal. Fantastic! AND, my knife was sharp! So many breakfast joints serve sourdough but provide blunt knives. That's a total no-no for me. The bacon was quite thick and very tasty but maybe a little too salty.
So all in all, a great experience - I'll be back :) Well done

Read moreI’m sad to write this review, as this used to be one of our fave breakfast spots in the hills, and the grilled heirloom tomatoes has always been my go-to order. It used to be excellent, but sadly the quality has been steadily declining over the past 2 years and after today’s breakfast, we might have to give it a miss from now on.
The “grilled” tomatoes were barely lukewarm around the edges, and cut into very thick slices where the inside of the tomato was still fridge cold and a little frosty. They tasted more like they’d briefly been in the microwave - quite gross, and I ended up leaving 90% of the tomatoes on the plate. The normally respectable amount of olives, feta and pesto were reduced down to a tiny smear on the tomato with barely a crumble of feta and a couple of olive slices. The bread was thin and the avocado not so fresh. Given that the price has increased by $6 or so, we expected the quality to remain but instead it was more reminiscent of a breakfast you’d make at home when clearing out the scraps in the fridge. Read moreI am a sandwich and/or soup lunch girl. M&B was always my local for coffee, snack, lunch ... in particularly the generous sized toasties for lunch and the choices of freshly made juices. Also, and in particular the kitchen happily adjusted recipes for this vegetarian. Coffee remains reliably good. However, toasties, scrambled eggs etc no longer available all day (and the former only in a paper bag!!! how was that decision made. Many locals talking about this and disappointed and even a little insulted with that service. Shortly after 11.30 the only light 'meal' available for a vegetarian apart from bread, was 'halumi & sage' - for $14.50 - for 6 very thin squares of halumi swimming in honey and two sage leaves. Could I have toast with that? No sorry. I have not been to M&B since they opened for dinner. It looks lovely and the lunch/dinner menu more attractive for an evening meal. I will get there sometime, but probably no longer for daytime food. ...
