Café Korb is a perfect little café with a simple 1960s style interior and a sweet terrace in summer. They offer good drinks and decent Viennese food. It’s a good place to enjoy a popular Viennese aperitif like Spritz con Aperol or a goulash and a real veal Schnitzel with a beer for example. Artists, poets, and all kinds of celebrities did and do frequent the spot. The original Café Korb was the place where Sigmund Freud’s Wednesday Psychological Society met in the early 1900s. A portrait of poet Elfriede Gerstl marks the spot near the entrance where she used to sit, and Nobel-prize winner Elfriede Jelinek used to meet her here. One wall features a Valy Export, one of the most important post-war Austrian artists. Nowadays, this cozy little place can get quite crowded. I love it for its friendly service, but unfortunately, it only has local newspapers (I have to go elsewhere for those). The menu features good traditional Viennese food, cakes, and strudels. Don’t miss the toilettes marked “,|,” and “()” to tell you which way to go! Today, the owner is an Austrian actor and former model, Susanne Widl.

Cafe Korb, a renowned gem in Vienna's iconic Kaffeehaus Kultur, came highly recommended by a friend, and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere of Cafe Korb captures the quintessential charm of Viennese coffee houses with its warm and inviting ambiance, making it an ideal spot for both locals and tourists seeking an authentic slice of the city's culture. The culinary highlights of my visit were undoubtedly the traditional Viennese desserts. The Apfelstrudel was superb, with just the right blend of sweetness and tartness, encased in a flaky, buttery pastry. Equally impressive was the Kaiserschmarrn, fluffy and light, served warm and dusted with a generous amount of powdered sugar, making it a delightful treat. Cafe Korb not only serves up delicious food but also offers a cultural experience that resonates with the historical richness of Vienna's coffee house tradition. It's a must-visit for anyone wanting to immerse themselves in the local flavor and enjoy some of the best traditional desserts the city has to offer.

First stop on our food tour is Café Korb, a historic Viennese institution. It’s owned by Ursula Strauss currently but it opened in 1904. Strauss, a prominent figure in the Viennese cultural scene, has maintained the café’s historic charm. There are every day regulars who have their designated booths and tables. During our visit, we enjoyed a simple dish of bread, butter, and chives—an Austrian classic. It was super creamy. I will be trying this at home. The highlight, however, was the Kaiserschmarrn. I had already tried this but I was ready for #2. Originating from the imperial kitchens, it is said that Kaiserschmarrn was created by accident when a chef, preparing pancakes for Emperor Joseph I, accidentally dropped them. Rather than discarding them, the chef cleverly added raisins, whipped egg whites, and powdered sugar before serving it to the emperor. Joseph I adored the creation securing its place in Austrian culinary history.

Just okay — and the service made it worse

Stopped by Café Korb to try the apple strudel — it was average at best and didn’t look fresh. Nothing special. But what really ruined the experience was the service. I went to Cafe Landtmann and the waiters there are quite nice.

The waiter at Cafe Korb asked me to key in a tip in a way that felt very pushy and uncomfortable, their attitude is disrespectful and rude. The waiter purposely cleaning the table when we were still sitting down. It felt like the only thing left was for him to brush the food scraps onto us.

It was really uncomfortable how the waiter acted like tipping was mandatory, especially when the only “service” was taking the order and dropping off the plate. I work hard for my money, and I don’t think I should feel pressured to give extra for basic service. Tipping should be optional, not expected unless the service truly deserves it. They didn’t even pay attention to what we...
