Nestled in the very heart of Vienna, opposite the grand and iconic St. Stephen's Cathedral, this café is nothing short of a hidden gem revealed. With the towering Gothic masterpiece as your backdrop, one is immediately swept into a scene that feels delicately torn from a European travel magazine. The very atmosphere hums with a timeless charm, blending history and elegance.
Despite its location in one of Vienna’s most bustling areas, service here is impressively swift—a nod to the café's high standards and a refreshing rarity amid typical tourist spots. The coffee, rich and robust, awakens the senses with every sip, while the croissants, buttery and freshly baked, flake apart in your hand, leaving a taste that is distinctly Viennese in its excellence.
Yet, it is perhaps the view, more than anything, that captivates. Watching the golden morning light dance on the cathedral’s spires as the city begins to stir is nothing short of a transcendent experience. This café isn’t merely a place to grab a quick espresso; it’s an experience, a reverent pause in the center of history, offering a taste of Vienna that is as unforgettable as it...
Read moreI had two visitors from overseas and we stopped there for a coffee in the morning on Thursday 10 August. It was a hot day and I was carrying a water bottle with me and before we even sat down the waiter immediately barked to put my water bottle in your bag! Not a nice welcome to start with. I mean what did he think that we would drink our own water?! We then had to wait almost 15 minutes for him to finish chatting with the other waiters to come and take our order. Needless to say we waited another 10 minutes before the coffee was brought to us. Coffee was ok but at almost 6 Euros per cup on the expensive side. Value for money unbalanced. The icing on the cake was when the waiter actually put a tip on our bill without us telling him or asking. Unfortunately I only noticed this after we had left. So we ended up paying 23 Euros for 3 Cappuccinos with very lousy service, a ripoff! Yes the location is wonderful, but the place is simply aggressively arrogant. The establishment should really consider employing friendlier staff, considering this is such a prime location, this bad service tarnishes the reputation of the city. NOT...
Read moreMy evening at Figlmüllers Café am Dom ended with one of the most uncomfortable encounters I’ve experienced in Vienna. After dining outside, I walked in at closing time to head downstairs to the restroom. The barman stopped me and asked where I was going—first in German, then switching to English when I responded. His next question—“Were you dining outside?”—was followed by a long pause and an almost mocking repetition: “Are you sure?”
The tone and body language carried an edge that went far beyond simple procedure, leaving me feeling singled out in a way that was deeply unsettling. As I continued downstairs, I overheard a nearby staff member quietly laughing with a colleague. The entire exchange felt dismissive and unwelcoming, the sort of treatment that makes you wonder if something more than mere formality was at play.
For a café so prominently located in the heart of Vienna, this lack of basic courtesy was both surprising and disappointing. The memory it leaves is not of the food, the location, or the atmosphere—but of a moment that made me feel out of place in a city where hospitality should be...
