Sonia should be ashamed of herself. We order 2 jerk chicken plates and 1 oxtail. The macaroni was completely burned (black) with no cheese, we called prior to going and told her we tried to come Wednesday evening but she was closed early to no business. Our jerk chicken was clearly old, cooked the prior day and was rewarmed on the grill and was completely dry and hard. I grill weekly myself in California so I know from experience. We were charged $20 for each plate. Beware of her pricing, she doesn’t post it, so that she can charge more for her plates to tourists. The locals here at my hotel “the Marriott courtyard” said plates are $12 and for oxtail $14 or $15 and they considered that be robbery. Sonia made us feel as if we weren’t welcomed to eat at her establishment as well. So we said to go and she brought the bags over quickly before my friend could even take a photo of the food, as she showed us our plates in the dark after bringing the food over... as it was 7:30pm after the sun went down. I’m super disappointed as you gave other minorities, myself who is African American and my two other family members who are samoan, from another island just like the Bahamas, supporting your business from the United States food you wouldn’t eat yourself or serve to locals supporting your business. I will be calling her business tomorrow and letting know her about my personal experience here. And will never return here, I want all tourists to be aware of her business practices and her over pricing! Nothing will come good to those who do...
Read moreSonia’s Jerk is a must stop along the Fish Fry Road. I was craving some Oxtails and Jerk Chicken and asked a few people in the area to guide me to the best spot. I found myself at Sonia’s. You can smell the flavors of the smoker as soon as you approach her restaurant.
I asked Sonia for a plate of Oxtails with Peas and Rice. It came with coleslaw and Sonia was kind enough to slide me a piece of her mac and cheese. Unfortunately the Jerk Chicken was still smoking up and not ready when I went, so I went for the Brown Stew Chicken as an alternative. Both dishes were AMAZING!!! Filled with authentic flavors and spices. It really put a smile on my face as I enjoyed each and every bite.
Now, a little bit about Sonia. She was such a sweet lady. She sparked up a small conversation with me while I waited for my food, and was even generous to take a shot of rum with me! She really puts a lot of love into her cooking. Prices were completely fair compared to what you are paying for a decent meal on the island.
Finally, as my food was ready, Sonia even threw in a piece of Jerk that was ready to taste and my mouth melted!
Absolutely will be coming back here any chance I get. Sonia thank you so much for your delicious food and lovely hospitality. Wishing you continued success and will see you soon once again!
P.S. - This is a cash only establishment so please plan...
Read moreFirst off, Nassau is loaded with the same boring underserved boring plates on repeat. After walking the esplanade and hoping for a hidden gem we all but gave up then stumbled on this LOCAL and AUTHENTIC shack. There is absolutely no other spot in the area even close to this good. I really got into the spirit of Caribbean soul and food here and did it barehanded, I grabbed my square of macaroni and dipped it in the bbq and I tore through bones and fat and ate like a madman and and made a huge mess and darn glad I did.
Sonia (I assume) is real, she doesn’t have a thing to sell, take it or leave it. It’s all kind of got a spice to it so hopefully that doesn’t bother you. It’s smoky and charred for sure, it’s an experience without doubt. She also poured us a rum and coke to sip with it all while we listened nearby music. At the end of it we purchased some pineapple and coconut pies. I will remember the meal and the service and kindness....
