This was a take out order. I live quite close to this restaurant so I walked over. The walk from 11 th ave only took about 5 minutes but I left late. By now I'm approaching 20 mins past the closing time on a Friday night no less. Tail between my legs I jog up the many stairs that is the entrance to Rose Garden Thai. Awaiting my awkward arrival is the majority of the restaurant staff. I expected a rather stern finger wäg but instead I was greeted with smiles and the English language. I've often encountered groups of people speaking their mother tongue knowing you don't speak that language for the sole purpose of discussing your outrageous behavior covertly. Not here. Here it was friendly and warm. Of course I apologized and gave the cashier a $ 100 dollar tip. That part never happened but I did leave something as a token of appreciation. Grabbed my still hot food and split. Back down the stairs and out onto Stephen Ave. Beware those stairs. One too many MaiTais and you could find yourself doing a lip stand on to 8th ave in front of a large crowd. The food was delicious. Standard Thai order, Pad Thai, a red curry, some rice with coconut. I will say I felt the portions a bit small; was me and my 85 year old mother dining. I know, Friday night right. We had to arm wrestle over who is getting that last bit of Pad Thai after having a quite small portion to begin with. As she is chowing down, I contemplate on how the whole order could have been larger. I'm going back for sure though. Although I will wait till I'm feeling flush due to the arrival of one government cheque or another. No one will describe this place as cheap. But Thai food has always been kind of a special take out treat due to the cost. Maybe the Thai restaurants around the city could drop the price a bit and see what happens. They might find that folks will choose Bangkok over Beijing, fish...
Read moreA wonderful experience with culturally rich interior that can make you forget that your in downtown Calgary.
A note: It is located on the second floor, so it lacks disability access for people who struggles in climbing the stairs.
At first the entrance of the restaurant was greeted with a dark, uninviting set of stairs. It reminds me of a haunted house.
Every time I go to a Thai restaurant, I always order a Thai ice tea and it was amazing. It was refreshing, cold and just the right amount of that oh so sweet evaporated milk. I highly recommend it.
Our first order was the calamari. It was nicely presented, cooked well, but it was bland. You have to add the sweet and sour sauce that came with it to add flavor.
Our main course were pad thai and hor mok kai, chicken wrapped in banana leaf with zucchini, basil and red curry paste. The chicken was really good that my girlfriend reminded of her food back home in the Philippines and it goes well with coconut rice. The pad Thai on the other hand was OK, nicely presented, but it lacked spiciness , and nuts which I love. The sauce could've been done better by adding just a bit more.
One of my thai food crave place to go. Overall, it was a great experience and I will definitely come...
Read moreAmazing food. Great flavours. Some people in our ~20 person group found it too spicy (even their mild dishes), but I loved it.
Servers were focused and some people in our large group thought they weren't friendly enough - I figure they're just focusing on getting it right, which they did in spite of how complicated our orders were (some people were sharing, some of us weren't, some were sharing with part of the group but not the rest, so sorting out our bill must have been a nightmare!).
The food also seemed to come out in a somewhat random order, I assume they were just bringing it out as it was ready? So at least it wasn't waiting under a hot lamp, but meant several people had food, while others were waiting - luckily we had good conversation to keep us going (and even though I ordered in the middle, my food was one of the first ready, so I was happy 😊)
They did add a 15% gratuity for the large group and if they told anyone, it wasn't me or the person who made the reservation. It's a pretty common practice, but something to...
