The food itself is pretty good but the service, not as great and the staff is very carelessly, I ordered pork sub but when got home open it was salad roll and today i stumble across this complain from Facebook : “ I’m extremely upset with my experience today at To Me, the drive through Vietnamese place off of MacLeod.
To start off, I am VERY lactose intolerant, so I’m extremely careful when I eat food I haven’t prepared myself, the only thing I can have that isn’t lactose free is bread that’s been baked with dairy.
My partner and I were out on the motorcycle today running some errands and I didn’t plan to eat while we were out so I didn’t bring my lactose pills like I normally have. We were at Chinook mall and my partner mentioned he was hungry and wanted to try this place so off we went. I always enjoy Vietnamese subs so I decided to grab one. On the menu it only mentions the subs having carrots, cucumber, and a “special sauce” which I knew couldn’t be everything. When we got to the window to order I said I wanted a grilled pork sub and I asked ”what are all the toppings that come on the sub?” To which I was told “carrots, cucumber, cilantro, and jalapeños” I then asked him if the sauce on it contained any dairy and he said “no it does not, it’s soy sauce based”. Okay great!
We got our food and sat down at one of the picnic benches they have outside and started eating. I noticed something thick and white at the bottom of the sub, it appeared to possibly be cheese but I thought maybe it was the sauce or mayo. I figured it couldn’t be cheese since I specifically asked about all the toppings and even made sure to clarify the sauce was dairy free, but I was skeptical. After eating maybe 1/4 of the sub I asked my partner if he could go to the window and confirm that there was no cheese.
I look up a few seconds later to see the man who had taken my order walking up smiling and saying “yes, that’s cheese!” To which I said ”excuse me?? You did not say that there is cheese on the sandwich, and I even asked you if the sauce was dairy free, so why would you not mention that there is cheese?”. He continued smiling and said he would prepare me a new sub but that obviously didn’t fix the problem that I had already eaten some of my sandwich. Dealing with a lactose reaction while on the back of a motorcycle while on the opposite side of the city from where I live is REALLY not fun, for those who are not aware. I now get to spend my day in a lot of pain and running to the bathroom constantly which sucks because I have important plans later today.
I know some of you are going to yell at me for not specifically stating to him that I am lactose intolerant but I truly thought I had covered my bases since this is what I do at every restaurant and I have never had a problem, and honestly I don’t think stating that would have made a difference. I’m hopeful that maybe this will help others who are lactose intolerant not be in the same situation as me and I also hope this will teach the workers to actually state what is on the food they are serving when they are asked.
Oh, and the sub itself was okay, nothing special, if anyone wanted to know about that.”
So overall, food is great but staffing...
Read moreUpdate: dec1 2024, -16 c out. Walked from hotel to TO ME vietnamese subs. Ordered again, chicken coconut sub with extra cucumber, second time I just walked up on there door at 730 pm...hungry, 2 minutes later, sub and salad rolls while one other car was ordering.. got back to hotel, sub was still toasty warm and salad rolls, the same. Hopefully you read that in a 1940s detective voice, but if not.... point is, you CAN walk up to ,TO ME vietnamese subs. It's not just drive thru any more, I hope. And, I hope my pics reflect how huge these subs are for price. Also, realize they do have peanut sauces in case of allergies. My next sub purchase is going to be the saute beef and hopefully I can get some peanut sauce on the side to sprinkle on and use my extra chili sauce for a little heat. This place IS a hidden gem in calgary. Oh, and they had no problem customizing the order. It may be standard to charge 2$ for any extra veggies or meat. They seem really accomadating, but I would assume it would be like ordering extra meat or veggies with their noodle offerings.
Previously in a past post.....
Saw reviews for this little bahn mii shop and was staying in a hotel just down the street. I didn't know if I could just walk up and order, so I knocked on the door and at first they found it weird ,but were happy to take a walk up order. I just thought of liability concerns if I ordered at the drive thru window while on foot.
My order came fast and I didn't need to sit in the cold for long. I got the coconut chicken curry sub and they gave me separate chilli sauce to spice it up myself. Personally , I only added about half of one container to keep it mild. But this was so good. Nice coconut flavor. They do use lemon grass, and for me ,adding that little bit of chilli sauce for some heat on the back end was so good! Loaded with veggies and next time I'm going to ask for extra cucumber. Because, there definitely is going to be a next time.
I also ordered 2 orders of their spring rolls. They packaged it in a reusable bag and tied the top down so I could carry it back. Everything was still warm, bread wasn't hard.
If your walking by the place, check it out. Wish they had a walk up window just for safety reasons. But definitely worth checking out. I've never had a sandwich make me smile before. The prices are very reasonable. Especially since most of the restaurants around this shop are more expensive. Very good for people on a tight budget. You may not get away with knocking on their door if the line of cars is long. I went later on a Saturday night where there were no cars ordering. Please, TO ME vietnamese subs, create a walk up window and you'll definitely get support from the...
Read moreFINALLY made it. This little spot has been on my food hit list for what feels like forever—and today, I made the journey. Or should I say, the pilgrimage.
Now normally I’d start with “This Hidden Gem,” but let’s be real: this place is so hidden, you’ll miss it if you blink, sneeze, or even think about blinking while driving down Macleod Trail. It’s basically the culinary version of a speakeasy… minus the password.
I was warmly welcomed by the sweetest lady at the window, who probably sensed I was about to order like someone who hadn’t eaten in a week. I went for one of each of their Banh Mi offerings: beef sauté, chicken sauté, and grilled pork. And because I have zero self-control around grilled pork salad rolls, I added an order of those too. For balance, obviously.
Note on the photos: Yes, the cilantro is missing. No, it wasn’t sabotage. My wife is part of the “cilantro tastes like soap” club, and I’m a supportive husband (with a side of judgment). That said, the veggies were crunchy-fresh, the bun clearly baked locally, and the chicken? Moist, flavour-packed, and had just enough jalapeño kick to remind you who’s boss. I gave the beef and pork Bahn Mi’s to a couple friends and they both raved about how good they were.
As for the grilled pork rolls—chef’s kiss. Still warm, smoky, and wrapped tighter than my schedule on a Monday morning. The freshness of the noodles and veggies really stood out—like, refreshingly good. Which is saying something when you’re eating out of a shop that’s approximately the size of a walk-in closet.
Now let’s talk value. For just ten bucks a sub, you’re getting food that could easily compete with those “curated sandwich experiences” downtown that cost double and come with a lecture about sourdough. My total damage? $50.40 for four subs and salad rolls. Worth every penny and then some.
Bottom line: This place may be small, but it punches way above its weight. Just don’t blink—or you’ll drive right...
