I visited The Coffee Bun based on what I had seen online. I love Asian-style dessert buns so I was excited to try it!
I ordered the signature coffee bun and the Nutella coffee bun. The bun itself has a crunchy caramelized layer on the outside of the dome that isn't too sweet and is a lovely addition. The bun itself is lightly sweetened and fluffy (similar to other Asian dessert buns).
The signature bun I ordered had very little filling in it and was mostly a gaping hole in the center which was disappointing and felt like a bit of a rip off. The Nutella bun had lots of filling and was exactly what you'd expect from a Nutella dessert. I really enjoyed that one. They're a good snack of you're looking for something light and not overly sweet.
What I did not enjoy was the service. A young man served at the till and he was super unhelpful and dismissive when I asked questions, even though there was no one else waiting and I was the only customer. Didn't seem happy to be there or want to sell his product at all. If I hadn't made the journey specifically to go there and had just happened to stop by, I may have just left after talking to him.
Overall, I'll probably go back some day because I want to try the ice cream bun, but not somewhere I would...
Read moreThey have coffee and they have buns; what more do we want of life? The buns are very, very good: soft and fluffy and very tasty. The sweet buns are very well-balanced: delicious without being overpowering or overly sweet. I've only tried one of the savoury buns, the garlic bun, but it was fantastic. The coffee is good, and the raspberry lemonade is so out of this world amazing that my kid says its the best drink he's ever had.
It's very quiet, in the morning; a good place to sit for a relaxed brew and bun while you read or work/study. The place picks up, in the afternoon. In particular, it seems to be popular with study groups heading over from Douglas College, up the street. There are loads of small tables close together, along the back wall, so the set-up is great for either coming on your own or with one or many friends, as multiple tables may be easily pushed together.
Service is good, though not super-speedy. If you want to grab and go, it's not the place for you (unless you order ahead and just pick up and run). This is a very relaxed place with a relaxed pace; a lovely spot for a...
Read moreThe food and drinks are great but really over priced and service was not the best. And a lot of the times when you walk in and order coffee buns, they don’t even have it and ask you to order it an hour before? Okay fine, so I did that, and I ask if they can put the ice cream and the buns separately because I’m not eating them right away and will be driving home or saving it another day. They said putting ice cream in a cup is a separate charge of additional $5–what? I said im not ordering more or less ice cream, I just wanted it separate so I can combine them myself later and not have the bun all soggy and wet. But no, they said doing that they are selling two different items. Which to me just makes no sense and feels like the owner just want to up charge for everything on something that is already over priced. I go to another coffee shop Papa Rotti and I never have issues like this. Just feels like a rigid business model :(
Edit: after the owner saw my review, they separated the ice cream in cups and said there wouldn’t any up charge. So at least the owner is aware of reviews and willing to...
