I am utterly shocked and disappointed by the state of the Coquitlam Library. What should be a quiet sanctuary for reading, studying, and peaceful reflection has become the complete opposite. People openly talk on their phones like they’re at a bar or pub, with zero regard for those around them. Groups gather, loudly chatting without any consideration, and kids are allowed to run around yelling. I’ve even witnessed people dancing and making a ruckus—yes, dancing—in a library!
To make matters worse, people are eating smelly food and chewing noisily, adding to the already chaotic atmosphere. It’s unbelievable that a place meant to promote focus and concentration has become so out of control. And the worst part? The librarians seem completely indifferent to this circus. There is no enforcement of basic rules that should make this a functional library.
The librarians keep insisting that they provide a “silent study area,” which is basically a closed-off room with no internet connection and crowded conditions, there’s only around 20 seats. This is not a solution! We just need a normal library where basic rules are enforced and people respect the space. Those who want to sing, dance, or jump around can go outdoors or find a more appropriate venue.
This is a complete waste of tax dollars—a public facility that is utterly failing to serve its intended purpose. The library is meant to be a quiet place, especially for those who need to study or simply enjoy a book in peace. It’s cruel to think of those people who are forced to endure this ridiculous environment. I truly can’t believe this is allowed to continue, and it’s an insult to the residents who expect a basic level of functionality and respect from a publicly funded space.
It’s time the city rethinks what it’s doing with this facility. If this is the future of libraries, then it’s a sad state of affairs. Perhaps Coquitlam Library shouldn’t even be called a library at this point, as it serves none of the functions a real...
Read moreI was there today with my friend and our kids during this beautiful sunny day. We went to pick up some books that were put on hold. While looking for held books, a couple of our kids were super excited and happy to be there. So they started running around. I tried to ask them to not run around, but they’re young children. One of the front desk workers asked me to get them to stop running around. So I tried again. As we were leaving towards the front , they started being excited and running around again. The lady comes up and passive aggressively comments “I think it’s time for the park”. So I responded “we were leaving and they ARE kids.” One- what kind of public library refuses for kids to be inside there excited and happy? Two- if you don’t like kids in their natural nature, go live in the forest, they’re allowed to be at a library that is for the public. Three- the people that she said were walking by being interrupted by my kids, didn’t seem phased and were smiling at my kids Four- don’t work somewhere that kids go to Five- I hope her sour nature doesn’t ruin my children’s experience of books and the library
I’ve only gone to this one a couple times because the same crabby lady seems to have a problem with kids who are highly sensitive and neurodivergent. She has always had a problem with my children, and honestly should go work at an olds folks home if she has problems with children. Children are allowed to be alive and happy. Yes I tried to stop them from being excited and running around but being a mom is hard as it is without a rude worker commenting. The Poirier location is much more friendly and happy to see my kids be happy. They don’t judge or ridicule the parent. They are not passive aggressive and grumpy. I would recommend Poirier 10000 times over. I will never go to that crappy location again because that lady doesn’t like children who are not...
Read moreI've never been to a library so beautiful and clean like this.
There were tons of desks to sit and study in the open space. You can read magazines, books or just study. Interior looked pretty nice here too. The central library in downtown Vancouver is probably the biggest library I've been to, but Coquitlam Public Library looked newer and cleaner in my personal opinion.
Couches looked super comfy and it was really comfortable. If you sit by the lounges by the entrance you can buy a drink at the vending machine nearby. There are books available in Chinese, Farsi, French, Korean, and etc. They also have virtual story reading time and a virtual chess session as well.
I really liked the plentiful of couches and desks for everyone. There was even cool looking pod to go study inside. You can even book a room for group study. Magazines and DVDs were organized in a neat manner. I can pull back the display for the back issues. New movies allow only 3 days for the rental. I heard the 3D printer is available in the library, but felt unsure if they still have this in the library. I think it's best to...
