Came here for breakfast by myself on a cold, overcast Sunday for lunch in early March, around 10am. There were a couple of tables taken already, out of the maybe dozen in the place tops? Seating for 30? It's pretty small, lots of natural lighting, the standard modern atmosphere of wood, minimalistic, bare light fixtures, open kitchen concept. The most unique thing is a small fish aquarium on the right side bar counter, but instead of fish, it is full of pickles. lol Very friendly staff. There are lots of items on the menu I'd like to try, but I went with the traditional breakfast, as I was just feeling like having that. The toast was very good (a maple butter on white baguette, not really toasted, but didn't need it?). The bacon was excellent, a few firm strips, cooked just the way I like it (well done but not near burnt). The hashbrowns looked possibly frozen, but I don't think they were, diced small, a bit greasy with bits of onion & pepper for flavor, with a side of ketchup, and the scrambled eggs good. I'd come back here anytime, for different meals/just drinks, etc 2nd visit: for brunch on a hot Sunday in July. Arrived maybe at 10:30 and we took a two seater in the center of the room. The place was about half full. Instead of individual coffees being poured, they provided a full French press, which was cute, and had enough for a couple of cups each. Two of us both tried the Eggs Benny (mine with mushroom, his with ham), and both enjoyed a lot. It took a very long time to get our food, with apologies from the server that the Hollandaise had not turned out, so they made it again. It was about 45 mins before we got it, and then we found the hashbrowns weren't hot, but the meal was still very tasty overall, and we had no rush to be anywhere, so it didn't spoil the visit at all. 3rd visit:made reservations for two at 6pm on a rainy Sunday before going to a show downtown. Parked in the Bishop's Landing lot and we were only the 2nd table taken when we arrived, so guess reservations weren't necessary. Within the hour there, two more tables got taken, and the place is pretty small, so that felt about half full. Anyway, I'm glad I finally tried here for dinner because I loved it. We split a bucket of the truffle fries, which had a strong flavor, topped with parsley and some shredded cheese, side of a curry mayo? My donair gnocchi entrée was delicious - served in a bowl to make it only look half full, but think that was intentional and the serving size was just right actually. The small bits of donair meat, green onion, cherry tomato, red onion and donair sauce were the perfect combination of flavors with the gnocchi itself. My friend had the pork belly jambalaya (purposely picked due to its expected heat/comfort quality as he had a bad cold). His taste buds were obviously not 100% but he enjoyed it fully, and I sampled a taste, which impressed me as much as my entrée, for flavor. We each got crème brulees for dessert, which were simple but done very well and tasty. I look forward to coming...
Read moreMixed feelings on this one, but landing on one of major, major disappointment. This place was recommended by my wife's friend at school (a native Nova Scotian) as it's her favourite restaurant in Halifax. We wanted to try one of her recommended restaurants during our visit to Halifax and decided to go to this place for brunch.
Our server was friendly and answered our questions, and made a few jokes also - which is always welcome. We placed an order for the falafel bowl, the salmon eggs Benedict, and a small French press coffee. On a side note, what is with Halifax and French press coffee (expensive $5) at restaurants which give you a cup and a half of coffee? First I've experienced this and feels kind of cheap on the restaurant's part.
We didn't wait too long to get our food, but there was a reason for this: it was the most sparse and saddest breakfast I've been served in my life. My wife's falafel bowel was half comprised of shredded iceberg lettuce (think Subway style) with a few sliced red and green onions and cucumbers, and 6 small, burnt, falafel halves. The other half were tater tots you'd buy at the grocery store with barely any seasoning. All of this for $17.
My salmon eggs Benedict was even more disappointing. Also sparsely plated, one of my eggs Benedict had a single slice of salmon that barely covered the English muffin and had the same cheap tater tots scattered across my plate. All of this for $21 and my watery coffee for another $5 bringing this to the worst $26 breakfast in my life.
Maybe we ordered the worst thing on the menu? Everyone else's order looked great (maybe it was the chicken & waffles). What doesn't help is that the server said we made great popular choices when we asked. Clearly that wasn't the case.
We went to The Henry House the day before for brunch. Paid less, had amazing service, the food was spectacular. Going here actually left us feeling sad, a bit pissed off, and still hungry after paying almost $60 all-in.
Again, mixed feelings on this one. Just steer clear of what we got and maybe you'll have a better experience...
Read moreWe started off by asking for a mocktail. The server made us her special mix which had a tropical/peachy taste. Personally not a fan of mocktails, but I would order this one again from how good it was.
We got a Schezwan Chicken Katsu for appetizer. It was phenomenal. Surprised it's an appetizer and not a main dish. Would give that an honest 10/10. Star of the night 100%
For the mains we ordered donair gnocchi and the burger with fries.
For the donair gnocchi, it was very flavourful. The sauce wasn't too sweet which we really loved. The gnocchi was very soft and fresh.
The burger was worth the price for sure. I feel like the caramelized onions with the mayo i added for a personal preference made a great pair in the sandwich. I asked for the same mayo they put in our Chicken Katsu appetizer. (Yes it was that good)
We ended it off with a brownie. It had a dark chocolate flavour and was rich. The raspberries on top were not overpowering it, I personally don't prefer fruits with my chocolate but i surprisingly liked this pair.
In general the food was an easy 10/10.
Service was outstanding (sorry I don't remember her name, but she was great and understood how we wanted our food and drinks made). 10/10
Bathroom was clean and tidy which is always a good thing to see. Well done and definitely coming back again for the...
