Having eaten in countless busy places around the world, from big cities like Sydney and NYC to smaller towns in Croatia, I know what a packed restaurant looks like. Black Sheep Restaurant in Halifax was extremely busy when we visited. They gave us a small table for two in a corner. It took about 7 minutes to get the menu and another 10 minutes for someone to take our order. When our server did come, they were very nice, but clearly running hard because the place was packed. It felt a bit understaffed. I had the Diner Breakfast with a Propeller IPA beer. The breakfast looked pretty small for the price, which was around $22 USD only 2 eggs, little bacon and two pieces of bread. My fries came with a ketchup-style sauce that had squid ink, which looked fancy and tasted good. I always like trying local beers in Canada, and the Propeller IPA was good. My wife had the tomato soup with a cheese sandwich, which looked huge and she said was very good. I really liked that they took the time to explain each dish to us before we started eating, that was a nice touch. We spent close to $60 USD for two. I still thought it was a little overpriced for pretty basic plates, one beer, and one coffee.

This was definitely the fanciest Eggs Benedict I have ever had. It’s Christmas Eve and I was out for a drive in the snow and was getting hungry. Needed a bite to eat that wasn’t far from parking. So I cruised down to the waterfront and parked and across the street was Black Sheep. The service was amazing. Told the Host I just need an eggs Benny and he recommended the brisket one right away. Did not know what I was in for! Amazing, Smokey brisket on the English muffin. Topped with sauerkraut and a touch of hollandaise. It was absolutely delicious. The fries really stood out. Crispy and flavourful, maybe a touch salty. But they were great. Now for the fanciest looking thing I’ve ever consumed and also have never had - The house made mayo with squid ink. I’m not huge on seafood to begin with so I was quite apprehensive about trying it. But I dug in and it was tasty. No crazy fishy taste or anything but I still don’t think i know what squid ink tastes like. Overall. Amazing experience and delicious food!

So it pains me to write this review as the Black Sheep has always been a favourite of ours - but this morning's experience was just not it. The food was good but the service we received left us leaving the restaurant shaking our heads.

  1. We were a group of 5 including a baby. We brought the baby's food. When I asked the waitress if she could heat up the food in the microwave she said no as there was no microwave in the kitchen and so I asked if they could provide some warm water or something so that we could at least warm it that way. She wasn't sure so went to ask - instead of her coming back to the table, a man who seemed to be the shift supervisor/manager came over. He let us know that they were unable to touch/warm the baby's food due to provincial food laws, blah blah. That's fine. We understood that (but you couldn't provide a bowl with warm water in it? I didn't want to push). But no smile, no helpfulness to try to help us out, no "is there something on the menu she would like? ....etc etc". I ended up chasing after them to order a fish cake for my daughter, which she ended up liking!
  2. My mother in law ordered the fish and chips. It came out looking very much on the dark brown side - most likely in the fryer for just a bit too long. It just was not very appetizing looking and honestly I am surprised the server brought it out. When we pointed this out to her, she agreed and she brought it back to the kitchen but they said it was fine so she brought it back over to us. Talk about awkward lol. Then the shift manager found his way over to us again and said he would get us a new one and comped the first one - which was good of him and honestly not necessary - but he seemed very angry doing so? A smile and some chit chat would have gone a long way.

Maybe everyone was just having an off morning - nevertheless, it was a strange experience.

I will say I had the Bimbambop with the beef and...

Oh, dearest patrons of the culinary arts, gather 'round as I regale you with an account so delectable that it shall linger upon your tongues like the finest vintage port! Nestled within the quaint confines of this establishment, I partook of a most extraordinary repast— a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich, resplendent upon a foundation of sourdough bread, which, I dare say, was the very embodiment of ambrosial delight.

The sandwich, adorned with the earthy richness of mushrooms, was a veritable symphony of flavors that danced upon my palate with the grace of a minuet. Accompanied by a signature tomato soup, a potion so velvety and reassuring that it could chase away the dreariest of Atlantic mists, it was a culinary embrace that warmed my heart and soul.

And let us not overlook the pièce de résistance—a cup of Earl Grey tea, steeped to perfection, its fragrant notes wafting through the air like a gentle breeze through a blooming garden.

But, dear friends, what truly elevated this experience was the presence of the enchanting server, Capri. Her kindness and insight were akin to the light of a thousand candles flickering in the twilight, infusing our gathering with warmth and hospitality. She made us feel as though we were the most esteemed guests in all of Halifax.

In the grand tapestry of my leisurely days, this gourmet sandwich has become my staple breakfast, a treat I eagerly anticipate on my days of repose. If you seek a haven of culinary excellence, look no further! I implore you to partake in this delightful rendezvous—your taste buds shall thank you, and your...

If I could do 2.5 stars, I would, but I’ll round up to 3. My husband and I had Black Sheep as #1 on our “must try” list for this trip after my best friend highly recommended it and said her and her friends went 3 times in their short time to Halifax when they were visiting because it was apparently so good. Well, it turns out they meant the brunch was amazing and unfortunately my husband and I came for dinner. After having such high expectations, we were quite disappointed. There wasn’t a huge variety on the menu and the prices are quite high for what you get. This was our most expensive meal on our trip and the least enjoyable. The cocktail I had was very refreshing in the heat wave, so I enjoyed that (although it was mostly ice), but the food was just average. I had the lobster ravioli which was very unique and as pictured, it looked very well-presented and I loved that the ravioli shells were handmade, but for the price we paid, we wish it came with a little bit more than just 6 raviolis. I was not even close to being full after eating the ravioli. My husband ordered the soft shell crab and shrimp and he was not a big fan at all. The seafood itself was pretty good, but deep frying the crab with the shell on made it difficult to eat (especially in the dark), and the grits and greens (bok choy) were completely flavourless and lacked salt. Unfortunately, based on this experience and the prices/portions, we will not be coming back, not even to...
