We went to the Brown Hound for drinks, not food, and couldn't gave been more delighted by our server, Gwen, who I believe was equally delighted by our presence, although she may have been mocking us and to be fair she would not have been wrong to do so. Regardless, we ordered beers, she brought them, she gave us a chance to refuse the onslaught and in every case whe chose to face the challenge. She chuckled, we drank more, and at the end of the night, Gwen did ask us if we knew how much we'd imbibed. We had no idea how much we'd drank, but of course Gwen knew, because of course she did. We'd returned to Halifax after a twenty year absence to find the city strange, unfamiliar, and unfriendly but Gwen in no uncertain terms make us feel welcome, and for this I am thankful. Overall, the beer selection at the Brown Hound is likely a bit pedestrian but the atmosphere is beyond stellar and you cannot go wrong. My only actual complaint is there were a lot of drawings of pugs and retrievers on the wall - even a raccoon but not one single hound that I could find, but to be fair I was 13 pints in and who the hell has eyes at that point. Go, enjoy the drink and food, and know that Gwen is by every measure the best and wisest women you will meet, come hell...
Read moreWhat a beauty little spot that’s almost hidden from view. My friend and I found it through Google, and as we walked along Hollis we knew we found it when we saw this beautiful little courtyard adorned with lights.
A few steps down we found ourselves at the front door.
Right away the smells from the kitchen wafted towards us and we were hungry!
It was busy tonight, but we got a spot right away as there was only two of us. We sat at the bar , the very end of the bar in a tiny little corner for ourselves.
The service was amazing! Everyone very attentive and happy to help.
I had the chicken sandwich. Was fully expecting a friend chicken but it was grilled! I was so happy about this as I’ve had my fill of friend chicken sandwiches.
The toppings were fresh and crisp and seasoned just right. Couldn’t put it down.
The fries we need to talk about. The odd cut, and the light batter caught my attention. Then I picked one up and bit down. It was super crispy and lightly seasoned. Dipped in the aioli or even the Guinness gravy really made them come alive.
Clean plate club all the way....
Read moreI am blind and travel with a guide dog and under the Blind Persons Rights Act of Nova Scotia, I have the right to enter a restaurant with my guide dog without showing any paperwork. The hostess at this establishment insisted on seeing the paperwork, luckily I had it and I only showed it because I just wanted to try one of their beers before rushing back to my cruise ship. She even asked her manager so it wasn't just her. Guess this place thinks it's okay to violate the law and turn away blind people with well behaved guide dogs because most (particularly tourists from the US) do not carry paperwork with them everywhere they go because it's not required. I will add that some Canadian provinces do allow restaurants to request documentation but Nova Scotia is not one of them. I hope with the bad publicity from this review that this restaurant will apologize to me and get their act together so no one else has to go...
