I've enjoyed all of my visits to this cafe over the years despite being relatively infrequent. I always buy an espresso drink and a bakery treat and they never disappointed me.

The only thing it falls short on is also the reason I have not visited this cafe often: it's building and location. It is a small cafe without a lot of standing or sitting room, but on a nice summer day that isn't a deal breaker if I can take it to go or sit on the patio. A bigger factor is this: it's located on a street that acts a bit like a bottleneck downtown (on account of its incongruously narrow sidewalks for a downtown location) which makes me less likely to wander down the street and therefore makes the cafe rather forgettable as it does not stand out. This also makes me think about the lack of accessibility, for if it's mildly inconvenient for a walking pedestrian to navigate through the tight sidewalk then the problem becomes exercerbated and cumbersome for wheelchairs and bikes. Ordinarily this would not be a factor I would judge the cafe for as it's the city's jurisdiction, but the owner has declared publicly that she is opposing the city's proposal to widen the sidewalk and provision a bike lane as she pleas to keep a few parking spaces on the street-- so she decided to make this problem...

Unfortunately, this cafe has decided to close at 2:00 now. They say it's because of Covid. Covid does not come out at 2 pm. They are using this excuse to maximize profits by just getting the morning and lunch crowd. As a business owner, they have the right to set whatever hours they want. As a customer, I have a right to buy my coffee at other places. What they will soon realize is by closing to afternoon crowd it will slow down their morning crowd eventually as people like me that sometimes go morning and afternoon will stop going. On that note because they don't feel the need to be open for a full day to service their clients, I will not be going anymore, even when they are open. I owned many businesses over the years and I use to have employees calling me wanting to close early because they said it would save me money. I banked on a long vision and even though it was slower in the afternoon and I sometimes I would spend more for staff than I brought in I was all about servicing the client. I can say without a doubt that approach worked and helped me build my business. Other franchises in my group that took the short vision and closed early were out of...

I give them 1 star for at least caring enough to serve free-range eggs, which is the only reason we went there. Otherwise, they would get no stars for apathetic service, for which you tip beforehand when paying - BIG mistake, and a chincy-ness that sends the message: we don't care about cultivating repeat customers. We ordered the huevos rancheros, which, taste-wise, weren't bad. But I ordered the 1-egg version because I was told by the cashier that it was a lot of food. Well, it was about 4 bites. But the worst was that on both the website and wall menu, sour cream and guacamole were included in the meal, but we were charged $1 for sour cream and $1.50 for guac. When the meals came there was about a teaspoon of each. I mean, why bother!? That kind of nickel and dime-ing is a huge turnoff, and the reason I was given was that they've started a new thing called Mexican Mondays. But I was there on a Saturday. That's like saying - We've painted the bathroom blue so we're now charging for items that were once included in the meal. So, my paltry plate of food went from an almost reasonably priced $7, to $9.50 (1 tortilla and 1 egg!). Needless to say -...

The food is not bad but it's not worth the experience. The service was poor, we arrived at the place and we were totally ignored, we had to chase a waitress to ask if we had to be seated or we could take a table ourselves (the two people at the bar looked directly at us and completely ignored us). It seems to me the people at the kitchen had to do everything (from cooking and serving to cleaning up) while the people behind the bar just take orders (they won't do anything beyond that) It's really disappointing because we found that people in Halifax are very friendly and helpful. My suggestion: walk around the corner (not even 2 minutes!) and go to an Italian cafe nearby (we had the best Devil's Chocolate cake there).

My wife and I visited Halifax from Toronto and Steve-O-Reno is hands-down our favourite coffee shop for breakfast. We came here for breakfast 3 out of the 5 days we were in Halifax. Their pour-over single origin coffee was incredibly well-brewed and their latte was also fantastic. The barista definitely knew what he was doing. All the pastries and bread were fresh and delicious. My wife bought 3 different scones and all of them were big and tasty, so were the bagels and muffins that I had. The coffee shop had a great atmosphere overall as well. Truly a gem in the city!

Steve-O-Reno's seedy oatcake is quite possibly the best oatcake in Halifax (in NS?... the world?). It was so good and a pretty hefty size so you are getting a good deal for your money. The cappuccino was great too and beautiful to look at. They have a sweet patio where you can tuck away in peace and quiet with a book for a little while. Though they close a little earlier than most places (2 pm on saturdays), they were pretty relaxed and did not boot anyone out right at 2 pm on the dot. Great background playlist too. Thank you Steve-O-Reno's people!
