When I was younger, I remembered that sometimes my mom would take my brother and I to Edo Japan as a "treat" - it was my favourite place in food courts and I always looked forward to it. This was over 10 years ago when they had many locations in the GTA - Hamilton, Burlington, etc. Since then, they pretty much all closed down (much to my sadness).
When I drove by the area and saw the once-familiar name, I had to do a double-take and decided to go inside. My brother and I were actually looking for a nice restaurant to sit down at that day, but nostalgia took over and we're glad that we took the plunge!
At first, we weren't sure if it was even the same chain as we once remembered - the design and fonts of all the menus and signs looked completely different. However, once the food arrived, the sauce was exactly as we remembered it. Much better than a certain other "teriyaki experience" that seems to have an abundance of locations...
In addition, the service was fantastic. Although it's sort of a fast-food type place, we felt like we were getting something more. The cashier delivered us the food at our tables, and checked up on us periodically as if we were in a restaurant. It was appreciated and I felt bad that I did not tip in advance when paying - as I usually don't tip for fast food.
Even though the nostalgia was strong here, I believe that this place is incredible and worth visiting. I'm so glad that the name exists again in Ontario, even if it's...
Read more2nd post: RESPONSE= Edo Japan in Mississauga has much to learn... They shouldn't be considered a sushi restaurant because the owner does not understand the issue with it's new location. I reiterate that sushi should be made literally the second you finish ordering and the order goes through the system. I believe that I can buy cold sushi from Walmart if I want to for the same price or even less. I can speak from experience having eaten at another Edo Japan in the province of Alberta where they cooked all ingredients and assembled a pretty place with sauce, the minute each customer moved from the waiting line. So my conclusion is that this new image or change in franchise has not gone well for Edo Japan. But it's ok if you have different rules because NOW I KNOW that HEARTLAND EDO JAPAN is not a place where I'll go to eat authentic sushi!!! Visiting this place today was a complete let down because the new staff was very disorganized. They refused to make fresh sushi (with the excuse that they only prepare new trays of sushi once the refrigerated ones run out) because at our time of order they had too many orders. The place was pretty empty so I did not understand their reason behind this action. It is like they only give priority to take out delivery and not dine in customers. You are paying for their service as a 'restaurant' and it is not up to standard level. To top it off, the sushi containers don't say the made date and time for it. In general I witnessed a...
Read moreThe place itself seems to be like contemporary minimalistic style, a very clean, neat space.
The food presentation looks to be like canteen food, the bento boxes look like toys (meant to be reusable?), and plates are paper plates.
In my opinion edamame is best steamed, as it is done at most Japanese places I've been to, then tossed with spices and/or seasoning, at edo their edamame is somehow oily.. their menu says that it's steamed, and the sesame chili option is not spicy at all (I'm pretty low tolerance for spicy food). My siblings have tried the tempura shrimp as part of their bento box meal and it was very heavy on the batter.
Today is the first time I've been there and I got the fresh grilled vegetables with yaki soba noodles instead of rice, and the noodles were somewhat chewy but for the most part they were stuck together as if it was overcooked or, precooked and cooked again to heat through with the vegetables.
There is also this "grab & go" shelf that consists of pocky sticks, wasabi peas, tumbler cups, and hi chew candies. I'm not sure what demographic they are targeting but I think they missed the mark for culture.
I gave 2 stars instead of 1 because the employees were fairly nice people, but I would not give 3 stars as it is not an okay place and I would not...
