I am more than obliged to offer more detail regarding my experience at the Halal Guys. Please see below regarding the concise points which resulted in my 1-star experience at this location.
Price Factor: I was charged Approx. $16.00 for a Combo plate and a fountain drink. Relative to other renowned restaurants in Mississauga offering similar menu-items/cuisine, this premium pricing does appropriately, nor respectively reflect the portion-size and quality of the food I was given. Several notable Mississauga chains offering similar mixed platter topped with their own renowned “white” and “red” sauce come at ½ fraction of this cost (including a drink).
The Mixed plate container was filled halfway with chopped lettuce and the main portion (rice, beef and chicken) was topped with a frugal serving of garlic sauce. Once again, at least a dozen local competitors in the Mississauga region offer similar cuisines that have generous serving sizes of meat, sauces and do not aim to fill your plate with chopped-bagged lettuce.
Overall, under no possible means am I able to justify spending $16.00 for this meal again as competitors offer me the same, if not better value for a greatly reduced price
Quality: As mentioned above, the food itself does not justify this price-point. Albeit being a renowned and trendy chain, the newly opened Halal Guys Location does not bring anything new or exciting to the Mississauga food scene. Nor, does it elevate the competitive edge with respect to the vast local offerings of middle-eastern inspired cuisines.
The food itself was palatable but evoked no experience greater than that which I have had with similar dishes offered at competing chains. (I.E. the infamous “Chicken on the Rocks” offered across multiple restaurants in the GTA)
Customer Service experience:
My order felt rushed and I was told that this location does not carry Lamb (which is one if not the most notable meats offered at the authentic American Halal Guys’ restaurants across the U.S.).
I was given incremental and methodically measured portions. (I.E. One precise scoop of chicken and rice; No more or no less. In addition, to a layer of “white sauce” that served more to make my platter look visually appealing for a picture, than flavourful for my personal consumption).
A male employee walked around the dining room with a bottle of white sauce and casually interrupted diners to see if they would like to have more sauce drizzled on their platter. Amusingly, he completely neglected my table and walked passed me even after having signaled him a few times. What happened to the concept followed by the authentic Halal Guys in NYC, where one can pour themselves as much “white sauce” or “red sauce” as they please with via a self-serve option?
I hope I was able to provide both concise and reflective detail to support my 1-star rating.
I do hope my comments are acknowledged appropriately for the betterment of the service, pricing and quality of...
Read moreI was in a hurry to get from one meeting to another and had planned to get a Ramadan special (2 regular platters) in between for my next client. I called ahead to place the order and the lady on the phone said that I couldn't place an order on the phone, app or in person only. I emphasized to her that I needed the Ramadan special and that I was SUPER short on time, if she could make an exception, she refused to. So I drove over to the store to place the order in person and the same lady was at the counter and said that I can't get the Ramadan special cause it's not 5 PM yet. HELLO? Couldn't she have told me that BEFORE I made the trip out to the store? I tried to reason with her, it was 3:30 PM and I requested that because it was just two regular platters, if she could just do it anyways but she wouldn't budge. I made it VERY clear that I was in a hurry, I made it VERY clear that I wanted the Ramadan special so why couldn't she just tell me that it wouldn't be available? She was very rude to me and when I called the store later on to get hold of a manager, she pretended to be the manager herself and refused to give the phone to an actual manager or owner. She said the manager isn't available but then suddenly gave the phone to a man who claimed to be the "other" manager. Luckily the gentleman I spoke to was actually the person in charge and really listened to what I had say. He assured me that this wouldn't happen again and I have faith that he will stick to his word on that. I rated this experience one star but I'm adding another star because the gentleman was really nice and understanding. I hope that this woman won't continue treating customers this way and will actually listen and clarify things over the phone properly in the future. I've read so many reviews now on this location complaining about this woman and how she's rude or discourteous to everyone. I hope the management team will ensure this doesn't happen to...
Read moreHalal Guys - a name apparently synonymous with high quality gyros, shawarma from NYC ! Have been looking to try out if it does really live up to the hype and what a fall from grace it was !
Let's start with the food itself, or rather, the complete lack of flavor and quality. The highly acclaimed street food from The Halal Guys was nothing short of a letdown. The supposed "famous" platters were bland and tasteless, lacking any distinct seasoning or spice that one would expect from a halal eatery. The chicken was dry and overcooked, resembling nothing more than a cheap fast-food chicken patty. The falafel, which should have been a highlight, was lacking in any discernible flavor. The lack of attention to detail and care in preparing the food was evident in every disappointing bite. Even their famed white sauce tasted nothing better than a slightly jazzed up mayo, failed to understand what the hype is really all about.
Moreover, the portion sizes were incredibly underwhelming. One would expect a hearty and satisfying meal, but they serve rather meager portions. The ratio of meat to rice and toppings was skewed, resulting in a lack of balance and overall unappetizing presentation. It felt like I was being ripped off for the minimal amount of food I received. They fill up the platter with plain chopped lettuce, bell peppers, tomatoes (and these are all just raw veggies, no flavor in them) along with a measly serving of yellow rice , which would leave most folks craving for more. Had added jalepano, did little to improve the insipid taste.
