If you’re seeking a satisfying all-you-can-eat Japanese BBQ experience, Gyu Kyou delivers great value with its $29.99 Friday lunch special.
Starters: The house salad, kimchi, and pickled cucumbers were fresh and well-prepared, with the miso soup being a standout—rich and flavourful. The crispy gyoza was another highlight, boasting excellent texture and seasoning.
BBQ Selections: The short ribs and brisket were the stars of the show, both tender and flavourful. The miso pork belly was a delightful surprise, while the thinner pork belly offered quick cooking and a nice contrast. The thick-cut pork belly took longer to cook but was satisfying for those who enjoy a meatier bite. The kalbi, however, was underwhelming and can be skipped next time.
Additional Items: The king oyster mushrooms were decent but not particularly memorable, and the chicken cartilage was quite bland—probably a one-time experiment.
Desserts: The coffee pudding was strong and not overly sweet, a perfect choice for coffee lovers. The sesame and vanilla ice cream on a cone was creamy and well-balanced, rounding out the meal nicely.
Drinks: Cold drinks are an extra $3 (not included in the AYCE price) but come with free refills, which is a nice touch for those who like to sip throughout the meal.
Ambience & Practicalities: Located in a plaza with free parking, Gyu Kyou is spacious and comfortable. It’s best to book ahead for groups of six or more to secure a table.
Final Thoughts: For $29.99, Gyu Kyou offers great value with its variety of high-quality BBQ options. While there are a few misses, the overall experience—paired with attentive service, free parking, and a relaxed atmosphere—makes it a solid choice for a casual...
Read moreI’m thankful that another Japanese bbq restaurant has opened in the heart of Mississauga. It’s a great location, and I like the vibe inside: modern with a hint of traditional. I gave the food a 4 because overall the menu items were delicious, but nothing surprised me or excited me, flavour-wise. It’s just what you would expect from a Japanese bbq restaurant. It doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy the food. I would definitely come back here next time I’m craving bbq, and I do like their marinade for their meat better than another Japanese bbq place in Mississauga (not sure if I’m allowed to name drop lol), so I devoured the food, no problem. Oh, by the way, they have torched sushi (my kryptonite).
I would like to mention that the cut of the meat for the briskets might be on the thin side, so they burn and stick too easily on the grill, but maybe if they could alter that a bit, make the cuts a sliver thicker, it would help with the quality they put out. The dinner menu also has a fair amount of selections to choose from, but the lunch menu is much shorter in comparison, so if you’re willing to spend and want to truly experience the restaurant’s offerings, I would go with Dinner.
I know I gave it a 4 overall, but I would give the restaurant a 5 for service. I found our main server super attentive and engaging, very considerate of her customers. She even asked if we wanted her to take a picture of us. Usually isn’t it the other way around, the customers have to ask the servers? I loved that she took initiative.
Highlights for me: beef tataki, torched salmon, prime kalbi, sweet soy marinated short rib,...
Read moreFantastic Experience! This was our first time visiting this restaurant, and it lived up to the hype. Although the place was busy with over 10 parties ahead of us, the wait moved quickly thanks to their ticketing system that alerts you when your table is ready.
The Good: Atmosphere is modern and pleasant, nothing over the top but comfortable. We were seated in a booth for two, and service was quick and attentive. Extensive menu options: beef (steak is a one-time order), brisket, kalbi, cow tongue, pork belly, sausage, seafood, vegetables, sushi, and a wide variety of Korean side dishes like pickles, kimchi, bibimbap, and cold noodles. Their grill system pulls smoke away from the side, no bbq smell on clothes, which was a big plus.
The Mid: There is a 12% service charge added to the bill. We adjusted our tip accordingly, but this might catch some customers off guard. For dessert, they offered two ice cream options: vanilla and black sesame. We both chose vanilla, but it turned out to be coconut-vanilla, which wasn’t disclosed. If you're expecting classic vanilla, you may want to skip it.
The Bad: The ordering process could be streamlined. Currently, you scan a QR code to view the menu, then order verbally in person. Without a tablet or digital interface, it's hard to remember everything you want and can feel rushed when servers are standing/waiting.
Washrooms were not clean. They should check more frequently or upgrade to sensor-based fixtures.
Overall: Great food, speedy service, and a solid first experience. We'll definitely...
