I had passed by this place on numerous occasions and kept thinking the elephant on the sign was so cute! I'm not generally interested in trying out sandwiches, but I was curious about the food after seeing that they are West African-style brochettes on nice bread. In Plateau, I find that there isn't very much culturally varied food around compared to other parts of the island, so I was really excited to finally try something different here. I had the half chicken-half beef sandwich and it was exactly what I wanted after walking around and shopping all afternoon. The meat was good quality, smokey and juicy. The poppyseed bread was also amazing, I wish I could buy demi-baguette here and take them home for breakfast! Can't wait to try the sesame kind next time. The fried plantain chips were crispy but light, a perfect sidekick to the sandwich. I also got a lemonade (made in-house, I believe) and I didn't realize this until I tried it but it had a lovely floral note of what I think is violet? I'd totally buy this to mix with gin at home. The owner also threw in some hot bofrot (little yeasted donuts with a bit of sugar) for me and my friend to share. A great desert if you're not into things that are too sweet. I'm so glad I ate here on a whim, it's great to know that during this time there are still new and interesting foods in the Plateau to...
Read moreI’ve been to baguette brochette many times because the food is so good. BUT. When I last went, last Thursday, to get a pick me up because I was having an awful, hard day, I had a horrible interaction with the server. As soon as I entered I smiled and said hi to both the men working behind the counter. I then took a moment to read the menu and then approached the server to order. As I ordered, he immediately interrupted me in an extremely rude tone and stared me in the eyes, and said “You can say hello.” Even thought I had, with a smile on my face. He then proceeded to say “what do you want”, all in a horrible tone. This encounter, especially after an awful day, was my final straw and made me literally break down in tears as I waited for my order. This was meant to be something to help me with my day, but in turn, made everything worse. I was disgusting by the tone and treatment I received. This was also late at night as a 20 year old woman. Getting spoken to like that made me feel very uncomfortable and small, and I even felt pressured to tip after this encounter. I am truly upset about this, and, unfortunately, have to contemplate ever going back again, even though the food is amazing. I have been left thinking about this scenario ever since and am...
Read moreFor Africans all over the Diaspora this shop is a godsend. I don’t know how they do it but if you’re craving the taste of home this is the place. Just the way they cook the meat they really manage to bring out flavours and nostalgia. So at approximately 18$ for a trio including plantain chips a saucy sandwich and a homemade drink like BISSAP, I have no complaints. They also serve extras like fried ripe plantains and fruit cups. The pull is so strong with this one I’m pretty sure I also found a high school classmate from out of the country last time I was over there. I overall recommend anyone to come eat here, regardless of where you’re from, wether that be for a quick lunch or a sit down with friends. BUT if you do get spicy, IT IS NOT FOR THE WEAK. Those of you thinking “hmmm lemme try spicy” thinking you’re stepping out of your comfort zone let me tell you, you are. African spicy and regular spicy are not the same, believe me I know. By walking up to the cash you will notice they sell their hot sauce in a jar, it really is no joke. This is why I crave for more African...
