200% fantastic and 10 stars out of 5 stars for its authentic, original and homely South Indian cuisine fare! I am originally from Chennai and settled here in Canada many years back and by chance, during my vacation from Vancouver, I stepped into this unassuming (unappealing and modest) place called Chennai Express and what a lucky day of my life for me it was! Neve before I had such a super tasting chicken Biriyani - not even in Chennai or for that matter whole of South India! I am not exaggerating! I had the salted lassi and what a taste it was! Please visit this place or order a takeout, you will hit a culinary jackpot! Owner Venkat, who is originally from Chennai is courteous and friendly and he has priced the menu very modestly and the value you get in return is gold! I within an hour went back to this place again and ordered for idlies (rice cakes) and believe me, again, they are the best idlies I ever had! I was looking for another salted lassi but he had, no wonder, already run out of the same and it was only 3 hours since he opened the shop for the day! He had just a half a cup left and he gave me the same for free! Please do not miss this place, if you really want to have a real and genuine South Indian items at a very affordable price, right here in the very centre of downtown Montreal!

A Delicious Detour at Chennai Express** Ambiance: Sharing a space with other restaurants means seating is more "musical chairs" than fine dining Parking? Forget about it, it's a treasure hunt. But hey, who needs ambience when you have dosas this good? Food: Forget your fancy tablecloths, Chennai Express is all about the taste. Their dosas are the real deal - the crispiest, most flavorful I've had in Montreal in ages. The sambhar and coconut chutney are the perfect sidekicks to this South Indian symphony. Service: Be prepared for a wait - it's a one-man show here! But the dude taking orders, prepping food, and managing everything else is a saint. Super polite and calm, even with the pressure on. Overall: It's a culinary pit stop with a few bumps along the road. But if you're craving a delicious and authentic dosa experience, Chennai Express is worth the wait (and the parking hunt). Just don't forget your patience!

They were out of everything except Dosas since it was almost closing time. They make dosas quite big which I didn't anticipate. But still, two dosas are good enough to make a stomach full meal. Coconut Chutney and Sambhar: Both were good. No wow factor but very much edible. Masala Dosa: It was good. The potato masala tasted great and the dosa was quite well made. Vegetable Dosa: Didn't like it that much but was okay. The taste wasn't that good - a little off taste. Maybe because it was the last batch of vegetables - not so fresh I suppose. I did a takeout and the service was quite quick. There are two other restaurants next to it and only this one had customers - speaks a bit!!! A good place for South Indian food (takeout). There is some seating available but then it is shared among the three counters, so can't really count on that.

This guys are the real deal! They opened up a year ago, being the FIRST to bring South Indian cuisine in downtown Montreal, and today, they are the absolute best! You can tell it's great since sometimes it gets so crowded, the line goes up to the door, or even outside it! Their food menu is vast enough to cover almost all your needs, with items such as dosas, biryanis, idlys, and my personal favourite, the kothu parotta. They also have a good selection of starter items, with my personal picks of samosas and onion bajis. The managers/owners running the place (father and son) really value their customers' satisfaction, and they are very nice people to talk to. I had a few friends go there during their trip to Montreal, and the son even went his way as to explaining them the best tourist spots here. They are very approachable people who really go out of their way to make sure their customers are happy. Even if other spots open up in downtown Montreal (I know there are two near Guy-Concordia metro, one of which opened recently), they cannot beat the level that Chennai Express has established over the past year. They've made me a happy customer who will definitely be...

I had high hopes for this place. However, i was terribly disappointed. The sambhar was like water and the quantity was shocking. The owner literally gives two spoons and when i asked for more he reluctantly gave two more spoons. The chutney was inedible, unfit for human consumption. Finally,he takes American Express but when i gave my card he casually said: can you pay cash or visa as i don't want to pay the transaction fee which is higher on Amex. Needless to say, i said no as i wasnt happy with the meal. No mercy.

Edit following owners comments: This owner has shockingly posted comments dismissing all critical reviews. The language itself shows that the owner cannot take criticism. Calling my review fake and senseless, shows the owner has no courtesy and is outright shameless. He is living in a utopian world saying he has the best chutney! It has nothing to do with personal hatred dude, i dont even know you! You might not remeber but 4 months ago i visited and you did ask me to pay by any card except Amex. Instead of cursing critical reviews you should strive to improve and act upon them like other...
