It was mid to later November 2018 when I was walking along Drummond Street towards Saint Catherine Street with my car parked across and I had about an hour on the meter and I was coming from a business appointment and I hadn't eaten all day long. As I cross the street I looked around to see if I recognized any places as I haven't been there in quite a while in this area and there was the mr. Steer sign. I almost said I was loud oh boy I haven't seen you in a long time! And then I realized I was hungry and wouldn't mind perhaps.. I Burger and maybe a Coke and fries and I entered the place not far from the corner of Saint Catherine Street and Drummond and I was greeted by the manager and I said I hadn't been there in a long time and we had a nice chat and he seated me and a professional excellence and cheerful waitress took my order. I saw a complete Middle Eastern family eating together with your old grandmother and the father and mother and the two kids and they seemed happy to sit by the window with the mr. Steer food. Shortly afterwards a younger than me guy came in and ordered the same thing I did which was a hamburger Coke and fries and I actually changed my order to match his it had something extra on a cheese and bacon. The waitress describe the cheese to me as yellow which was quite honest and the bacon was good and the steer Burger was better than your fast food joints by far. And for the price in the middle of downtown Montreal the great service it was fine. There was like going back in time when I was in my late teens early 20s and now I'm over 65 and it was great to reminisce. Couple of weeks later coincidentally I saw a group of people on Facebook who actually decided to meet at the same mr. Steer and I recognized the place that the manager had told me had recently been renovated. I was hoping to see the old smokey dirty knickers teams stay in place but instead it was clean and attractive well put together. And I went to other time around 2:30 in the afternoon when there wasn't much business there so I got excellent excellent service and I was quite Charmed by the manager and the waitress. And for a joint like this that's like a 10 X Plus from what I would expect. If I'm downtown again in that area and I'm hungry I'll definitely stick my head in there for a burger with yellow cheese and good bacon on a great beef burger served lovely with fries and coleslaw...
Read moreInexcusably bad, and extremely overpriced too. These are not just mediocre tasting burgers, but unappetizing and simply stomach turning. The meat (formed in a small ball) is seasoned, however the taste is unappealing--similar to meatloaf or cooked spam. To make matters worse, my "medium cooked" burger was served literally raw (meat uncooked and cold to the touch!). A replacement came cooked medium well this time, but fared no better in taste. Adding to this, the lettuce was pale white, and the tomato was an under-ripe end slice. The bun tasteless. The only passable part, the bacon added. All in all, the burger was just stomach churning, unpleasant to eat and left me feeling nauseous afterwards. The fries were a tad under cooked but average tasting at best. The only saving grace was the milkshake I ordered, which uses real ice cream and really old fashioned tasting! Nice and thick, even the straw stands in the middle. However, it was not enough to make up for the rest of the meal. The family member I ate with thought even less of the burger, and not usually picky (they had recommended Mister Steer as they'd had tasted their burgers back in their glory days, decades ago). How times have changed.
The cost of two burgers, two milkshakes and one fries? $50! Shameful, considering the complete lack of care by their chef, and the terrible (inedible I should say!) quality of the food served.
This restaurant is a simply part of the macrocosm of what Montreal restaurants have become today. Live solely off your past reputation and glory, charge and arm and a leg, and then serve utter rubbish to your customers as they will blindly accept anything served to them (the best prey are unwitting tourists!). Unfortunately will never be returning. As the saying goes, fool me once, shame on you, fool me...
Read moreAs we were walking by the restaurant we stopped to read their menu out of curiosity, when a member of staff from the restaurant started talking to us. A tall, bald and assertive staff member listed their best selling items and insisted that we came inside to look at all of their awards and articles in the Montreal Gazette. I didn’t count, but he must have mentioned that they had articles written about them in the Montreal Gazette about four times.
We said that we were just looking and weren't hungry, when we said this he simply spoke over us and repeated how the burgers were the best in North America. The overzealous, aggressive and incredibly pushy member of staff repeatedly tried to usher us into the restaurant as though he’d just come back from a high pressure sales boot camp. He held the door open for us and said, “I’m holding the door open for you so come and look, I know you’re not hungry”.
I never write reviews, but I do know that giving a restaurant a one star review without trying their food is probably bad practice, nevertheless the guy at the door made up my mind about the place. I’ll probably never go back, because of him. I do know that they must have won their awards for a reason, but I’ve never wanted to tell a guy to shut up as much as this one. Hopefully this guy’s manager, or somebody from the restaurant, reads this and moves him into a position where he can’t interact with their customers.
It only took me a couple of minutes to write this, but hopefully I will save somebody from this guy’s belligerent and insistent sales techniques. Maybe he should consider a change of career and start selling timeshares. I know that this review may seem a little aggressive, but I feel like it matches our experience with this particular...
