Restaurant Review: Smitty’s - Jasper
Name of Restaurant: Smitty's Family Restaurant Location: Jasper, Alberta Date: August 2025 Dish Ordered: Big Country Breakfast (ordered on three consecutive days) Seating: Dined inside (Outside seating is available)
Cleanliness: Cleanliness at Smitty’s Jasper was consistent with what one would expect from a family-style diner. The dining area and tables were generally clean and well-maintained. On one occasion, I was served a glass with minor dishwasher residue, but this was promptly replaced without any issue. A small insect did land in my dish once, which, while not ideal, can happen in any environment and did not reflect a broader cleanliness problem. Overall, the establishment maintained a presentable and acceptable standard without any extreme concerns.
Service: Service was one of the strongest aspects of my visits. I was seated immediately each day, and the staff proved both efficient and friendly. Orders were taken quickly, and drinks and food arrived impressively fast-typically under 10 minutes. Refills were offered proactively, and I rarely had to ask for anything. The staff made the dining experience smooth, attentive, and welcoming, which added significantly to the overall impression of the restaurant.
Food: I ordered the Big Country Breakfast each day for three consecutive visits, which provided a reliable opportunity to gauge consistency. The portions were generous and left me full and satisfied each time. The food was cooked properly-crispy where expected and fully done without being overcooked. Seasoning was somewhat lacking, but this was easily remedied with salt and pepper provided at the table. While the flavor was not exceptional, it was solid, comforting, and consistent.
Atmosphere: The atmosphere inside was calm and inviting. The restaurant was not overly busy during my visits, which contributed to a quiet and relaxing environment. The temperature was comfortable, and background music and television volumes were set appropriately-not overwhelming, yet adding to the diner’s homely feel. Seating was cozy and comfortable, creating an experience that felt both casual and welcoming.
Value: In terms of value, Smitty’s delivered exactly what one would expect: a hearty, affordable meal at a fair price. The portion sizes aligned well with the cost, making the experience feel worthwhile and budget-friendly. For those seeking a substantial breakfast without overspending, this location offers good value.
Other Notes: Accessibility was convenient, with the restaurant being within good walking distance. Parking is street-only, which is typical for Jasper. While it may require a short walk depending on availability, the restaurant is centrally located and within easy walking distance for most visitors.
Final Ratings (out of 5) Service: 4.8 Food: 4.3 Atmosphere: 4.0 Cleanliness: 4.0 Value: 4.6
Overall Rating: 4.4/5
Conclusion: Smitty’s in Jasper provides a classic family diner experience: quick, friendly service; hearty portions; and a cozy, relaxed atmosphere. Over the course of three consecutive visits ordering the same dish, the restaurant demonstrated consistency in preparation and service. While the food itself may lean toward the average in flavor, it is reliably cooked, filling, and satisfying for the price.
This is not fine dining, but it doesn’t aim to be. Instead, it succeeds at offering exactly what travelers and locals alike might want in a casual brunch spot: comfort food served efficiently in a warm, family-friendly environment. If you find yourself in Jasper and need a dependable place for breakfast or brunch, Smitty’s is well...

Service: we were waited on by a really nice sweet person. I think she was new because we had to reiterate everything. Not that we mind repeating, but noone likes to be served incorrectly multiple times. Above all, the diner wasn't even busy - it was barely at 20% capacity.
Cleanliness: The plates were not clean. Enough said. There may have been a shortage of clean dishes because the hostess came so many times to clear away each of our dishes.
Food: Our main focus was the food. If you serve a good hot meal with bad service, most people won't complain. We ordered herb marinaded chicken with a side of mashed gravy and roasted turkey. The chicken barely had any herbs and it was so bone dry that your initial reaction would be to squeeze the hell out of the grilled lemon, thereby making it too acidic. The plain white rice has to be sadly married to the mashed gravy to be edible. The gravy was clearly a premixed type and not homemade. I didn't order the turkey for myself, so I wont be a good judge - but if a restaurant is providing packaged cranberry sauce, I would rather shop at a gas station for food. The cook didn't know anything about presentation - the food is just put on the plate.
Price: It was affordable (20-25$) and it is no excuse for the poor food.

Read moreWas one of the worst breakfasts I've had in a long time. Sat down. Place was ok. We ordered . There was 3 of us. We asked for 2 spinache and swiss omelets.. they ended up having onions and tomatoes... there was no description on the menu about what was included in the omelette if we would have known we would have made adjustments oh and they had barely any swiss. We asked to add mushroom to one and for sure not the other ad one of the consumers had an allergy. They both came with mushrooms. And hollandaise sauce...also not mentioned .. not a great thing. The third order was an international. What she got was not it. Was supposed to be 1 slice french toast , half a waffle, 2 eggs, 2 bacon and 2 sausage. We asked for the eggs to be sunny side. They came out over easy, over cooked with see thru whites and were rubbery and cold. It came with 2 slice french toast and 1 slice bacon. We didn't bother to return it. Asked for at least the half slice of waffle. It was beyond dry, and seemed old. They couldn't even be bothered to use a knife to cut it. You could tell it was like they grabbed it and ripped it. We did return the 1 omelette and after doing so the waitress completely ignored us and we had to keep trying to get her attention even for coffee. All I can say is what a massive disappointment. We were so stoked for breakfast... yeah never again to...
