House Of Donair & Shawarma — Restaurant in Ontario

I've been here numerous times, back when it was still called Famous King. Best shawarma in Kingston without any doubt.

The food quality overall has dropped a little bit since they rebranded as House of Donair and opened up the Downtown location.

In particular I've been disappointed by the way employees treat closing hours: on numerous occasions I've visited at 10:30pm and found them completely closed (despite hours saying open until 11pm), and even today I visited at 9:30pm (quite a ways from closing) and all of the meat on the rotisseries were gone, everything was put away, no one was at the counter and the employee was cleaning up early.

I understand that traffic is lower here and employees having a slow night want to go home and figure they can just clean up early so they can go home as soon as they can, but this is just not good business practice. This is still the 'flagship' location so to speak and the only location with their original full menu - if they can't even be open and ready to serve at the times that they advertise, I can't recommend this...

Honestly, if you go to either of the locations downtown, you will have the best Donair of your life. I have been getting Donairs from this place since they opened and they are fantastic. I was thrilled when I found out they were going to open a west end location, as I live in the west end and it would save me a 1/2 hour drive to get Donair. Unfortunately, I have been to the west end location twice now and was not impressed. I'm not sure if it was the employee I encountered or if the west end is taking liberties with how the Donairs are prepared. Both times, the tomatoes were in big chunks (think a quarter of a tomato each piece). If this was the only issue, I would not be writing a review but again unfortunately this is not. The meat was shaved off but never hit the flat top, the pita was never steamed and it wasn't wrapped properly. In fact, I don't think the grill was even on. It's too bad, I hope this is sorted out for the future, like I said, this is my favorite company to get Donairs from but for now I will stick to the...

Fantastic place with fantastic service. We went for the donairs, specifically, as someone who grew up eating east coast donairs and looking for a fix. The meat was incredibly tender, the portions were great, and the donair really hit the spot. For the price, it was worth it and we’ll be back.

On the service side, we asked for one potato for our toddler to see if she’d enjoy it since she’s going through a phase, and we weren’t sure what to get her. They gave us a small portion of potatoes AND rice, and wouldn’t let us clean up after her. They also handed her a small bread which she was ecstatic about. They were so kind, welcoming, and generous. We will definitely be back, and we will recommend this place to others.

Fantastic service goes a long way, and the welcoming and “it’s okay” feel when our toddler made a mess was so warm and telling of their values.

The place seemed clean, and service was quick. While we were there, traffic was steady and they kept up the pace.
