My 12-yr old Grand-daughter had PTSD after eating at Morrison's Restaurant. A trip to Kingston to see Luminosa Bourelis for my birthday ended badly when we decided to have dinner at this retro restaurant. We sat in a booth at the front and ordered from the all day breakfast menu. Our server arrived promptly and took our beverage orders. He was polite but rushed - the only server working that night. Should have guessed what the rest of the meal would be like when our coffee arrived and it tasted like it had been sitting on the burner for hours. Our orders were simple but the cook managed to get them wrong. In fact our server spent a lot of his time apologizing to customers for their mixed up orders and returning food to the kitchen. My daughter's "home fries" looked more like greasy mashed potatoes. They were luke-warm and inedible. Our server told us they were "out of bacon" so we chose sausages. The sausages were also luke-warm and looked and tasted like they had been cooked much, much earlier in the day and kept warm all day. Our eggs and toast were perfect. My grand-daughter's pancakes had an odd taste that we could not put our finger on. The table syrup was more like brown sugar water. Our server asked how our food was as he flew by our table. My daughter didn't want to complain but she mentioned it was not so good. Our server must have told the owner because he ambled over and asked what was wrong with the food. When my daughter told him it was cold he said that it was because the sausage and potatoes were cooked first, before her eggs. If we didn't like it we didn't have to pay the extra $1 for the potatoes. Basically, that's what you get at the end of the night. Ya, okay. But the inedible home fries and sausage was not the cause of my grand-daughter's PTSD. It was the yelling match that erupted between the owner, the "manager", and our server. The manager sat just in front of us at the cash register all night. He did nothing but take cash from customers. When he told our clearly "rushed off his feet" server to turn the outside light off indicating the restaurant was closed, our server snapped. He told the manager exactly what he thought of him. He had probably been holding his observations in all day and now they erupted out of him like lava out of a volcano. The language the two men used with each other was very colourful and insulting. The owner now stepped in to defend the manager who I think is his son. The owner told our server to leave. As our server was leaving my daughter handed him his tip. She made it a good one because our server will probably not get paid for that day. The owner also called him back to return his apron. Then the pushing and shoving began. My grand-daughter was already hiding her head against my daughter, now she started crying and sobbing inconsollably. A customer rubbed my grand-daughter's shoulder as she passed by then stood in the midst of the altercation waiting to pay. We also just wanted to get the heck out of there. You would think that after serving us sub-standard food and the disturbing loss of temper show the owner would have apologized to us and told us and the other customer that our meals were on them. Nope. The manager said "sorry" and happily took our money. There is a lesson to be learned here: always read the Trip Advisor reviews for a restaurant before eating there! Sure wish we had. My grand-daughter finally stopped crying....chocolate can fix a...
Read moreIf there was any way I could give this place a 0 star rating I would. The food was ok. it was nothing special but acceptable. The service was ok too. What was not ok and definitely not acceptable was the fact that the owner came up to me out of the blue and asked me if I was a Jew. He then proceeded to insult me when I said I was Canadian by saying that nobody else is Canadian except for people like the man sitting at the counter who I think he was referring to as First Nations. He proceeded to drill me and find out what my background was and where my ancestry came from . He then insulted Jewish people by making a hateful and derogatory comment. Nobody should frequent an establishment that promotes hatred and racism toward minorities. He was so bold, brash and cavalier and clearly thought nothing of making insulting comments . He said he was half Jewish and half Greek and he said that the right-hand was Greek but the left hand was Jewish because the left hand grabbed money. This type of conversation was shocking . It was disgusting and disgraceful and I told him so . I told him that he was a racist . When I tried to explain to him that what he was saying was unacceptable he dismissed me . I would hope that in this day and age such comments would not exist anymore. Canada is a multicultural country and people come to this country from other countries where they are oppressed because people from many cultures are accepted . It is illegal in Canada to promote hateful comments toward any group . Had I known that he would behave this way believe me I would never have set foot into that establishment let alone order food and eat there. For this reason alone he should lose business and no one should frequent this establishment. This was the most upsetting occurrence I have ever experienced in any eating establishment. Needless to say I will no longer frequent this establishment ever. If you are reading this review please consider the fact but this man does not deserve to have anybody's business for this reason alone he is rude and a racist and should be...
Read moreI am about the get passionate about a very strange thing - club sandwiches. They are the perfect sandwich. So many places put “club sandwiches” on their menus but they are just taking the name and making some sort of chicken sandwich. If there is cheese on a club sandwich then it is not a club sandwich.
It needs to be a double layered sandwich with bacon, mayo, lettuce, tomato, toasted bread white or brown bread, and and sliced turkey or chicken. Preferably cut into 1/4ths.
I found my love of club sandwiches at Morrisons around 2009 and while I have been to many other places and tried many other “club sandwiches” they don’t compare to this diner.
Here they shave meat off of a fresh turkey, use good ingredients, and do it the same way they have been doing it for decades. I asked the owner what his secret was and he said “if you serve people bad food then how do you get them to come back.” That’s why they haven’t changed their tried and true methods and use tasty ingredients.
Yes the inside is outdated, yes maybe the staff are sometimes grumpy, but honestly if I walked into a diner with an elegant dining room and overly pleasant staff I would think there is something very wrong.
The food is straight up comfort food, reasonably priced considering todays economy.
The owners are sooo nice. They are an older married couple. While I was eating there during move in week and a dad of a student came in to pick up a club sandwich. He said it was for his son who went to Queens and got a club sandwich every week and now his daughter was moving in too. So he was picking up for both of them.
The owners knew who they all were and were excited about the other kid going to Queens too. The dad asked if the owners would do a video wishing his son a Happy Birthday and while the husband muttered a bit his wife pulled him in and they both wished one of their regulars a happy birthday in the video.
