used to love coming here - last few times, the barista I'm used to seeing hasn't been there, and it's been who I presume to be the owner serving drinks. the drinks are good but of course, overpriced, which I didn't really mind when paired with good service.
I have a lot of sympathy for baristas, as I used to be one and I know how difficult customers can be. So I try not to be difficult. Today, I asked for a maple latte, which I didn't see on their menu but was on the sign outside. I didn't see whether it could be made iced or hot, so I asked: "Is it iced or hot?" To which she said "you didn't tell me". I realized maybe I should have asked, can this be made iced? But sometimes people get mad because it can't be, so I wanted to first ask if it was iced, hot, or both.
This is such a minor thing but every interaction with the owner here has made me uncomfortable. And then she laughed at me, like in a "this woman is ridiculous" type of way.
I paid $8.75 for a maple latte which was finished in about 5 sips. But I felt really embarrassed.
I think I'l find another coffee shop from now on.
edit: saw that the owner responded. their response changed my review to a 1 star. as i said, i was a regular - and as i said, i never cared about the price, as long as it came with good service. the owner, compared to the barista i used to see when i went here, is worse at customer service than the barista i had seen before, and terrible at taking critique, as you can see from their reply to my comment. "i am very surprised that you were used be a barista" oh, i'm sorry! i wasn't aware that when i am a customer, i should be held to the same standard as when i am working. sorry for stumbling over my words when i ordered!
if you have social anxiety DO NOT GO HERE. no grace is shown to customers.
(btw if you want to run a business, not great to alienate your regulars.)
I get the feeling that the owner hates people. You can see that in her responses to other one star reviews. I have a suggestion: make a little paper form for people to fill out, so that do you not have to interact with them. Better yet, hire and use staff who know how to talk to people and not scoff at then within TEN SECONDS of meeting them. Genuinely it is not that hard to...
Read moreAn experience at this coffee shop left a bad taste in my mouth. My friend, her son and I were ordering coffees. My friendâs 10 year old son asked politely if he could use the washroom. The woman, who seemed to be the owner, responded in a rude and dismissive manner, not making eye contact, that there were no washrooms. There has been a reopening of restaurants and cafes in the last week as we enter step 3 therefore there is some confusion as to what is now allowed. Regulations aside, I know the owner has kids, probably understands the issue with the lack of public washrooms and might have responded in a more empathetic and respectful manner to a child and his mother. There were so many ways that this could have been a friendly encounter but it wasn't. Her rudeness seemed intentional. Was race involved? If it feels wrong then it probably is wrong.
In response to the owner's post.
Thank you for your response. We understand how hard it is to run a business during Covid and it is true that there is a lot of confusion with regards to the reopening. I have been supporting your cafe throughout the pandemic. Whether or not you are able to offer up your bathroom is not the point in this case. Your response, which did not include a 'sorry', was a flat 'there are no washrooms' spoken in a dismissive tone. There was no reason to speak to a child in this manner especially when you have acknowledged in your response that he was 'polite'. He deserves the same respect that he gave you. This is the issue and this is the reason I left this review. It was an upsetting experience. FYI Anti-black racism does exist and your response felt wrong whether it was...
Read moretl;dr less than unfriendly service & lack of seating are my primary reasons for not needing to visit again. do not recommend.
was really looking forward to trying this place but ~9am this Monday my experience turned me off completely, which is unfortunate given how highly this place is otherwise reviewed - Iâm sure (read: hope) that my experience was a one-off but here goes:
barista serving didnât say a word and I got the feeling that I was a nuisance for visiting here and coming in while finishing a call - ordered an americano w/ oat milk & sugar which is kept behind the counter. so, she scooped some into my drink without asking how much iâd like, pushed the cup back towards me without a word then i had to trouble her for a stir stick or spoon (which they do not have/arenât available for customer use). again, without another word, she stirred it up, half put on my lid and i hustled out of there for some much needed fresh air before checking and spilling some (my fault, i accept!).
overall - disappointing experience for an average priced americano in a place with, literally, 3 chairs + 1 table. it was made clear from the start that I was not welcome, even bothersome, for ordering, let alone welcome to sit and stay. canât fairly comment on the espresso quality as I wasnât in the mood to enjoy it after the passive...
