This is a revised review as a result of the very good treatment we received from the management.
We went to Slab Burgers Monday, September 3rd, 2018 (Labor Day) precisely because it is one of the few places that grinds its own beef and is therefore not obliged by the nanny-state to cook burgers well-done, which robs them of both nutrition and taste. I LOVE their highly customizable burgers and great fresh cut fries.
So we ordered three burgers cooked medium rare. None of them were medium rare, but rather medium-well at least. We complained about this, got excuses at first, but then a very cordial manager came out, took my email address and phone number, and said that they would give me a future credit as compensation for the disappointing burgers. After several days, the very apologetic manager did, in fact, text me to tell me that I will have a credit and told me how to retrieve it. That is so uncommon and so nice on the part of Slab Burger. After all, I had dragged two people here (One newly arrived from Ukraine), extolling their cooked to order burgers. We could have just gone to hero burgers or some such establishment, but I told my guests that here we can get REAL burgers. I want to clarify that they came out while we were eating and offered new burgers on the spot, but we had already gotten through half the meal and didn’t want to waste food. Then they offered future credit. I was pleasantly surprised. They took my name and number and then did contact me, and straighten things out. I find this sort of treatment rare in the industry and this adds to my strong recommendation of Slab Burger.
The fries were good, and the option to choose either canned or fountain drinks was also appreciated. But the burgers this one time (in contrast to many others) were disappointing. However, the gracious treatment by the manager more than made up for it.
If you’re on the East side of the U of T campus, or anywhere near Bloor and Bay, seek out this little treasure on Charles Street just East Of Bay St. and just South of the Manulife Building. It’s not a place for a romantic soirée, because it looks a little like a dive. The food, though, is DELICIOUS! And there are several other options if you don’t...
Read moreWhile in general i am happy with the burgers (great meat), i'm not so thrilled that every time i've ordered a whole wheat bun, i've been given something other than that. (This has been happening since you discontinued the whole wheat flatbread buns). Last week (Thursday October 3rd) when with my mother, we both ordered whole wheat buns for our take out, one of us got a white bun and the other a gluten free one... and to add insult to injury there was a charge for the gluten free bun. Because this was a take out order, we did not check the accuracy of what we wanted while still in the shop. And it was not until later when reviewing my receipt did i realize that i had been charged for a bun that i didn't want and didn't order. On other occasions, the toppings have not been exactly as ordered ... again because this was take away food i did not check right away. If there are no whole wheat buns available, why not have your staff inform customers instead of just substituting something else AND charging them for what they did not order...
I'm not sure that i will continue to patronize your shop and that makes me sad... the meat is very tasty, and i used to be totally satisfied, but if i can't trust that what i order is what i'm going to get (and be over charged for it) i will go somewhere where there is more attention and care paid to the food that is being presented.
ok so the owner said to email him and he would follow up with me - I did so, sent him a copy of my receipt and have heard nothing back from him... very...
Read moreOrdered the beyond meat burger and it was served to me completely raw. It even smelled like the raw burger when you take it out of the package. I went to the counter to explain and ask for a more well done burger and the service was awful. The girl had no customer service skills and was just at a loss of what to say to me, just looked at me for a while. Eventually she asked (in an annoyed tone) if I wanted them to make me another one which I agreed to. Opened up my new burger and it was exactly the same. Raw and not cooked any differently than the first one. At this point I just threw both burgers in the trash and left.
Response to Shop Owner/Manager: I'm a bit confused by your response. This issue is completely related to the cooking of the burger in the moment, not prep. Prep would have nothing to do with the cook barely cooking a burger when someone orders it.
I don't think it should be my responsibility to get a reimbursement for raw food. Honestly, that should have been offered to me by the staff along with the replacement burger (that should have been cooked). Additionally, customers don't have unlimited time to continue to go up to the counter to complain about food not being cooked. After the second time, I needed to leave and didn't have time to deal with getting another burger. Bottom line, I should have been offered a refund the first time I came up to the counter with...
