Edited to add: I don't know what is your definition of calmly but your staff was not calm at all. It was not like the other customers could not hear what she was saying and she was very confrontational when we were taking the photo of the bill beside your advertised price so stop trying to cover yourself up and start holding yourself accountable because this is a recurring issue for your business. Multiple reviews here and on Yelp has highlighted this problem throughout the years! Like I said, do better.
It is a pity this review has to go this way as the food was really good.
My issue with this business is that the advertised price is not the same as what we ended up being charged and I unfortunately had to get into an argument with the staff over this.
The price for king crab was very visibly displayed as $48.80/lb in the restaurant. Which as a customer, is what I would expect to be charged despite any justification.
First when the bill was brought to us, we asked the staff why the king crab price was override and we were charged $68.80/lb and she did not even tell us that was the market price. Instead she had to check with her colleagues before getting back to us in which she told us "this is the price when you called in and made your reservation" which sounded so ridiculous to me and obviously she didnt buy this excuse herself as she immediately walked away after saying that and refused any eye contact.
It was only when we went to take a picture of the bill beside the advertised price then someone rushed out and tried reasoning with us.
Instead of listening to us, she kept repeating the same thing over and over again and it really got us over the edge and unfortunately this is when voices ended up raised.
Honestly, Golden Seafood Restaurant you know you made a mistake by not changing the price and if you had apologised from the get go, things would not have escalated and a happy celebration would not have turned out this way. It is regrettable that you see no need to even say "sorry" when your customers were misled by your actions and even using the small business/family business card to guilt trip. It is not the customer's fault that you were "too busy" to correct the market price.
This is no longer just about the price, it is about the principle and how unprofessionally you handled it. Also by reading other reviews, this is not the first time people have written about being charged a different price than advertised. Do better because your...
Read moreI’m surprised I’ve never written a review about this place all these years. It must had been all the food comas I’ve suffered from here.
I’ll write about dinner first. The portion sizes are the size of a sombrero, I kid you not! Honourable mentions are the scallop and egg tofu clay hot pot. The house special chow mein. Pork chop dishes. Peeking duck.
If you’re lucky and old school you probably have the 10% off card. You can’t get these anymore. There’s also a 10% off your take out if you order a certain amount but REGULARS KNOW NOT TO ORDER TAKE OUT HERE. The take out boxes are small. Your better off eating inside cause of the portion plates THEN box it to go. But you’ll only know this if your a regular for years. If you don’t believe me just scroll down and read the posts about people who do take out.
As for front house service yikes… Half the staff are lazy as eff, which isn’t fair for the other half who are hard working in their sections. Dining room seating yikes. It is crowded like chair to chair no space to walk. I sometimes wonder if they exceeded their seating capacity. This place is good value, no frills, and low key. Of course service is gonna be Sh&!!… just hope your lucky to have a good server the day your going. If your looking for classic authentic Cantonese food, it is here.
update Saturday August 24 2024 I made a reservation for 3 people under Dr. Hwei for 3 people. When we showed up they said the reservation doesn’t exist and showed us their reservation list for tonight. This really sucked cause it was the doctors birthday. Server said are you sure you made it on the right day LOL. I told her if it’s for someone’s birthday I wouldn’t make a mistake. It was your service staff or owner who made the mistake. So folks like I said, service is brutal. Can be a hit or miss and they really miss this time.
Luckily there was an open table last minute at fortune city restaurant on 1st ave. So if you guys ever get effed last minute give this other place a call.
Update Monday June 30 2025 Decided to give this place another try. Lady server asked us why we haven’t come regularly. We told her what happened. All of a sudden our plates were massively piled up I mean I kid you not it’s like these plates were ment to feed WWE Wrestlers. Didn’t realize it’s been 10 months. Alright let by gones...
Read moreI went today with my parents and everything was ok until we asked for the bill. As you can see from my photos that the price on the receipt is different from what is on the menu. I asked the waitress and they told me prices have increased. They told me all dim sum increased by $0.25 and all kitchen dishes increased by $1.00. This receipt here is actually the second receipt they gave me because on the first receipt, the Beef Tendon Rice Roll was listed as $15.25 (which is $2 above their price on the menu). I asked them, and then they changed it to $14.25. Then I looked at the receipt more carefully and saw that the dim sum prices on the receipt is $0.50 more than the menu price (not the $0.25 increase like they said). I then spoke with who I believe is the owner and she told me it is probably a computer system issue and that they don’t why the computer system is adding more to the bill than it should. She then said she will charge us what the menu price is and gave us a third receipt. The issue that I am upset about is not that they increased the price (I understand that all restaurants are increasing their prices due to inflation), but because no one ever told us there is a price increase when we sat down. This price increase wasn’t on the menu nor were we told by the waitresses. It was like a “surprise” when we got the receipt. This is unacceptable. They told us this price increase has been taken place for a week now, but the new menus couldn’t be printed yet. First of all, if this increase has been a week, isn’t this already enough time for you to print new menus? Second of all, the waitresses could of written the price increase on the menu as we sat down if they don’t have the new menus yet. It doesn’t have to be complicated, just needed to write “dim sum +$0.25 kitchen +$1”, simple as that, but they didn’t do it. This is the first restaurant I have ever seen to do this,...
