bakehouse has been one of the rare stars during the pandemic. This is a wildly popular western bakery started up by Chef Grégoire Michaud in Wanchai 4-5 years ago. They have opened three new branches during the past year, including this new spot along Kiu Chui Road just in front of the entrance to Hysan Place. This branch is open from 8am to 9pm daily and from what early queues indicate, it will be busy pretty much all the time.
Basically, everything is good at bakehouse and we have found their bread products, pastries, tarts, cooks, pies and loaves of bread to be very consistent from one branch to the next. These days bakehouse has become a go to place to try their excellent sour dough tarts. These are different to our local HK style egg tarts, a bit closer to the Portuguese varieties beloved over in Macau. The crust is heavier, a bit chewy not crumbly, the egg filling is creamy, slightly sweet and with a delicious flavour but without the burnt surface that comes with Portuguese tarts. In short, they are just excellent. You'll notice almost everyone ahead of you in the queue purchasing them. You can buy the tarts individually in a bag or 4+ which will be boxed for you.
I also like the cinnamon pecan roll, apple crumble danish, scones, croissants, sausage rolls (when you can find them) and the relatively new but surprisingly good Beef Rendang pies. Their cookies may be up there with the best in the city as well, I just never have enough tummy space to buy them as well.
When you arrive, expect a queue outside the should. It will move pretty fast as they operate to counters inside. Be ready to point to what you want. Staff will bag and box everything fairly quickly. Pay and be...
Read moreAs expected in any Bakehouse location, fantastic variety of delicious pastries and bread. Served fresh and delicious daily, plus fast and friendly service. There’s usually a queue and more so on weekends, but honestly, the one at their CWB store goes by pretty fast. Queue here is not as long as the TST store where there’s a much longer waiting time, particularly with more tourists around that area.
I went to the CWB location to try the tiramisu danish in particular (which was apparently only available in their CWB store), and of course some other treats like their lemon poppy seed cake and bestselling egg tart.
Have to say, I’m so glad I finally got to try their tiramisu danish; it was absolutely delicious and so far my favorite pastry by Bakehouse! Perfectly crunchy outside, soft in the inside. Loved the coffee flavor combined with the vanilla mascarpone and lady finger biscuit inside - truly what a tiramisu would be in pastry form.
The lemon poppy seed cake was also really delicious with such punchy lemon flavor in every bite without it being too sweet or sugary, and of course their popular signature egg tart is yummy as always. By far one of the best bakeries in HK...
Read moreHigh quality pastries, and a must try in Hongkong! If you’re unsure of what to get, the sourdough egg tarts are a must try, and the donuts are pretty good too.
The sourdough egg tarts are fantastic, with a creamy smooth custardy filling bound to satisfy with the perfect sweetness and egginess. The delicate croissant-like crust definitely carried a different texture compared to the traditional egg tart— it was flaky and buttery, yet crunchy at the same time. I daresay they have one of the best egg tarts in town..! The size of one is just perfect too👌
I’ve also tried their Matcha Azuki Red Bean donut, which was delicious! Perfected with kinako powder, it was fluffy soft and had subtly sweet matcha and red bean filling.
Definitely recommend visiting the Causeway Bay branch in the morning, it’s always pretty quiet and barely a line! The one at Central seems to always have a long queue. The only downside is there isn’t any place to sit so you’d have to enjoy your egg tarts standing.
If you’re in Hongkong, Bakehouse is definitely a must try at least once, add it...
