For a really authentic Hong Kong experience you have to at least once visit a cooked food market. There are many around Hong Kong and some are better than others. Chung Kee is a very typical place for you to eat like a local, at local's prices, with local people watching the horse races, no frills but getting a full tummy experience.
I went at the time between lunch and dinner so there was very little activity on the restaurant area at all. Staff were eating their food at tables, guys were milling around watching the horse races on the TV and there were four "uncles" getting organised for a hotpot with a portable hot plate at a nearby table.
Fortunately, there was a local guy who had also spent time in Australia so he could translate for me. But I was really in no hurry and was just happy to sit there and people watch. It was okay for me for the staff to sit and finish their own lunch and chill.
I ordered sweet and sour pork - not particularly adventurous but went for it. The food was really good, large portion. The staff all though I would be turned off cause it would be small pieces still on the bone, but it was fun to chew the meat off and spit the bones out like a local.
It isn't the cleanest place (greasy floors by the kitchen) butI really give the place 5/5 for atmosphere. It is just chill, not a tourist hype place and a good location to eat if you want to pretend you live...

Their chopsticks are always in white (or black on a couple tables), while their neighbor uses green. I like their "meat served in soup with rice", which is definitely their signature dish. For $49(2024), you can have up to 3 different choices of meat, with veggie included. As imagine, the hygiene among these eateries are not up to standard. Either you like the high CP of them, or you'll hate it for it's poor services and filthy tables and chairs. Btw, this eatery only takes cash, which is rather annoying with the changes I have to...
Read moreThis place is absolutely one of the best of Hong Kong restaurants. I had the baked black pepper 🥩 steak. This was definitely one of the best meals I had in Hong Kong so far. Everything I ever ate here is always fantastic 😊. You can't miss with the food here. The prices are fair for local working people, but the flavor and quality is excellent 👌. Try this place you won't be disappointed.
